Here is what I need in a ring:

white gold or platinum setting with single baguette on each side
about 1 carat princess cut center stone

I already understand clarity and color. My question is what the ideal measurements for table/depth/etc are? Basically, what other stats do I need to pay attention to in order to recieve the best diamond possible? I realize that how good of a cut is very important but is this also quantified by some stat?

Thanks again,
Ben

Ideal Cut Princess..

There is no formula for cutting a princess so that it has the "best" light return.

Here are a few lists of what characteristics are "better" - but keep in mind that numbers are NOT a guarantee. There are stones that to a novice apppear really spectacular, but the stone lacks the light return.

1. Is the culet centered?

This is very important as if the culet is off center, then the stone''s facetting could be lopsided.

2. Is the stone square or nea square?

If its not the length to width ration affects facets angles to where they might vary.

3. What is the crown height and crown angle?

4. What is the pavilion depth?

5. Are the angles of ALL the facets close with each other?

6. What is the polish and symmetry gradings

7. Does the stone have a GIA or AGS report?

The above list is not complete, there are far more attributes used in assessment of any diamond.

Hope this helps.

Although there''s no real formula, try to find a stone with a table smaller than the depth, and a depth no greater than 75%. Also, look for a stone with a girdle that is not in the extremes (TN-M, M, and M-STK are best). Finally, try to find a stone with a crown of >10%. These specs will not ensure a spectacular stone, but they will definitely help you to weed out the worst ones! Once you find stones that sound good, try to get ideal scope images to examine the light leakage.

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions!

There is more to getting the perfect cut princess cut than any set of parameters, but if you look at the princess cut charts on www.gemappraisers.com you will see some useful information that will lead you into getting a potentially pretty stone. You don''t need to have a 1A to have a great diamond, but if all the measurements are in the 2B and better range and the stone also looks great, then you will have a durable stone and one with a good depth to width ratio. m It would be a problem free stone.

The parameters do not promise beauty in light return, but they will help you. SOme of the other advice given here will also further your cause in gettinjg a great stone......

Shortly, we will have a modified AGA cut grade with a light performance report. This will assure people of high light return, great performance AND acceptable cut parameters. For now, the traditional approach is what there is.
