Hi Pricescopers,

I am currently searching for a 1ct Round Brilliant diamond to buy wholesale here in Australia to have my engagement ring made :)

I have stumbled upon a RB diamond called the SUPERNOVA; its a few hundred dollars dearer than a traditional RB & has 81 Facets, there is only one supplier in Australia (as far as I know) and little information is available on the web. I was told by the jeweler it is the same as a Solasfera in the USA, but I found that the SS actually has 91 facets. The diamond comes with a GIA certificate & a GEMEX or GIA light report.

I can purchase a 1.04-1.06 Supernova G/SI2 (eye clean), XXX (plus 3 XXX on Gemex report), with above certificates for around $9000 AUD. Is this reasonable?

Can anyone give me any information about these diamonds? I see it sparkles much more than an original RB & looks absolutely beautiful when compared side by side. But is it an inferior diamond- after months of research I have only heard of it now & other jewelers haven't at all. Am I best to stay with the original RB...? Being new to this all I want this to be a positive future investment.

Any help would be GREATLY GREATLY appreciated!! <3

Many Thanks :) xoxox

I would never buy a colourless diamond at retail price as an investment. Investment quality pink/blue diamonds are the only ones I may even consider (fancy+, 0.4ct+, VS2+) , and only if I intended to hold for more than 5 years.

You may find it difficult to find buyers if you buy a very unique cut, leading to a normal distressed sale into very distressed sale conditions.

More facets generally mean more sparkle/scintillation, but you may miss out on the brighter flashes of light due to less areas of contrast in a traditional cut RB. This is similar to comparing a TIC to a 60/60 cut, although these have the same number of facets.

I think this is a personal preference thing, rather than a strict diamond light performance issue.

Hi daydreamer,

Unfortunately, a diamond is not a good financial investment, if you ever wanted to sell it on the secondary market you could expect to recoup around 30 - 50% of what you paid originally. A lesser known branded cut might be even less appealing. If you want to avoid the depreciation issue, then I would suggest buying a diamond from a trusted vendor that offers a guaranteed lifetime upgrade and a buyback policy. Terms and conditions would apply, check which are applicable to your individual circumstances.

These extra faceted brands such as Solasfera - and I am just giving a general overview here- can be quite bright and ' busy' looking diamonds that some find appealing, the Solasfera has extra facets as part of the design. There can be visual trade offs however with these types of diamonds and I am unfortunately not familiar with the Supernova to give you any meaningful info about how it might perform, but it's a very nice name for a diamond I must say as I have an interest in astronomy. I would say to get a decent comparison, you might want to make sure you are comparing this diamond with well cut round brilliants, I would suggest comparing if you can with AGS0 cut grade and GIA Excellent cut grade, with the GIA Excellent cut grade stones, run the numbers through the Holloway Cut Advisor found under Tools at the top, in order to screen which score below 2, then compare your Supernova with those to get a comparison with how a well cut and possibly more visually balanced diamond compares. Basic components of diamond optics are brilliance, fire and scintillation, a diamond cut with a good visual balance in mind will show a good display of all three

I am sorry I can't be more helpful but I will try to find out more about The Supernova or someone else that knows this brand might have some information to assist you further.

I have one and they never actually gave me a certificate with GIA certification.
I'm very concerned about it all now!

I don't think I'd pay the mark-up for it. Stick with exclellent/ideal cut rounds. The investment is in the relationship, and never in the value of the diamond. But you certainly don't want to overpay. We have many people on the forum from Australia and they mostly buy diamonds from the US because they cost less even with the import taxes. You cannot buy wholesale unless you are a jeweler. So anyone selling to the public and calls themselves a wholesaler is being a little deceitful at the outset. Make sure they have an unconditional return policy, because many do not. That is the other half of the scam...you are stuck if you buy from them. I would only buy from a vendor who gives a 10-30 day return policy with no questions asked. An exchange policy is not good enough unless it happens after the return policy is up.

So my last advice is, do not buy without checking the specs of the stone (get the GIA report number and the exact weight of the stone) here and we can give you US price comps before you buy.
