Okay, thanks for your help so far - I am almost ready to choose a pair of diamonds for studs. My last question is what sizes are noticeable bigger than one another that it would be worth waiting for a pair of diamond to come up in that size (assume ideal cuts, H&A, same color and clarity range). Would you notice the difference between 1.2 ctw and 1.3 ctw? Between 1.2 and 1.4, 1.2 and 1.5 etc.

Once they are on the ear how much bigger does it have to be for people to notice it is bigger?

Look at the dimensions, not the carat weight. Most people "notice" a 0.5mm increase in diameter. It will depend on the specific diamonds that you pick for the pair, but 6-7mm is a big difference for example and will definitely be noticed.

Good point, it is the diameters that matter more than carats. For perspective, between 1.2 ctw and 1.5 we re looking at approximate 5.4mm to 5.85mm in diameter - so a little less than .5 which might imply that you really need to go up to 1.6 or so for it to really be worth the size premium

Exactly. But, it will depend on the specific diamonds too since there is a range that is considered "ideal" which corresponds to different diameters.
