I have a protocol sort-of question. My diamond stud earrings are set in platinum 4-prong screw-backs. The screw shaft is too large for the holes in my ears and hurts them.

I''d like platinum 3-prong martini settings with safety push-backs. I''ve had those and they are smaller and don''t hurt my ears.

Is it "feasible" to think I can find a jeweler who would trade me settings and charge me for the work

or is that just a dream and I''ll have to buy the martini settings and just be stuck with the screw-backs?

Thanks for opinions or ideas.

Hi Sherry,
Just to clarify... you want to trade platinum screw backs for a platinum martini setting and you want to do an even trade for the earrings paying for labor only?

(I apologize if I am being simple minded today. I have an overwhelming headache which leaves me with an IQ of 9)

It seems like you would be able to do that. I can''t imagine why not. I believe that screwbacks are typically more expensive than the martini settings. My girlfriend traded her earrings for a different setting because she didn''t like the prongs. They only charged her a nominal fee.

Good luck! Post pictures when you make the switch!

It''s a dream unless the place you bought them is willing to do it IMO.

Hrmm..I would be likely to say no, only because I can''t see anyone wanting to buy second hand earring mounts, and its likely too small an amount to scrap.
But then again, what do I know?!

I imagine you could find a pair for a nominal cost - have you thought about Stuller?

Ditto.

I''m not familiar with Stuller.

I bought earrings from Wink a few years ago 1.4tcw and had them set it the six prong fluted setting in plat, which was stunning but a bit heavy in the ear. When I told him he was super gracious and had them re-set for me in a plat martini setting in a trice. He was great about things as he always is.

Ditto Stuller, Wink of Winfield''s sells Stuller and same with Good old Gold.

Since they were ebay earrings, not bought from a local store, you''d end up paying the cost of the new settings. I''ve had someone change from a screw back to a regular post before without much cost if you''re willing to stick to the four-prong setting you might find someone to do that inexpensively.

Dad gum it! Or is it Dag gum it? Anyway, I should have bought them with the martini push backs initially, asking the seller to change them. In fact, I did but he said these setting were really low. However, I didn''t realize how large the screw post is.

I have a) tiny ear lobes b) they''ve been pierced several times and closed so my latest piercing is rather low c) and the "hole" is small.

I guess I will have to go to several stores and see what I might see. You are right. Due to them being purchased on Ebay, they aren''t going to be reset by the seller.

I can see I might have to learn to suffer!

How long have you had the earrings and are you wearing them daily? My smaller studs are screw back and after I wore them for a few weeks, my ears became use to them. Now that I have my WF studs, I don''t wear the smaller ones anymore and when I try to put them on, they kill my ears.

If you plan to keep your studs in and just take them out weekly for cleaning, it may be worth just letting your ears adjust to them.

Usually dag gummit.

I''m thinking they would probably give you melt down value. Do you really dislike them?

They are trade only, but you basically just chose a setting and have a jeweller order it in. Or ask them to order one in your price range.

Okay - I''m going to wear them a month, take them out once a week and clean them, and see if my ears adjust. Just too crazy to spend the money for new platinum martini 3-prongs, even though I prefer them.

This may sound nuts, but maybe ask a jeweler if the posts can be made smooth and changed to regular push backs???
