Hi guys.

Wanting help please. I have a just-under 3ct antique emerald cut and wanted to set it in a button back oxidised silver bezel with a wide 4mm rose gold band for a men’s ring for myself. Inspired by Jessica McCormack rings.

Two questions - get it set east-west so it looks less ‘engagement ring’, or set north-south?

Second, should I get the rose gold band polished, brushed finish or hammered??

Thanks!

See photos of ring inspiration and the actual stone.

I’d set it EW and in a satin-finished RG band. Can’t wait to see it - love collet settings and that’s a beautiful stone

Agree with foxinsox- def. east/west and I love the idea of a satin finished band.

Who will make your setting?? Gorgeous stone. I’m a sucker for those deep corners

definitely agree with the E/W but I think the hammered band might look great.

Hammered and I'd widen the shank quite a bit. Like 5 mm or more.

What a gorgeous stone. I would set it east west with a hammered finish. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Hi guys

You have all given invaluable advice.

I’m definitely going to have set east-west. With satin finish.

I’m still unsure about whether to do the hammered finish or not. My worry is that the ring might seem too fussy??

Opinions greatly welcomed

Start with a satin finish then get the hammered finish if you feel it doesn’t look right? What sort of hammered finish are you considering?

Thanks for that.

I wasn’t aware there were different types of hammering. Care to share examples?!? Thanks!

How wide a shank are you thinking...what size are your hands? I can get my DH to model his hammered silver band if that's helpful (he's a 10.5ish).

Depending on the coverage over the top, what about adding some cool metal shaping or engraving to the shank? If you widen the shank, you have such a nice area to do some design. Men's jewelry has the benefit of space upon which to design. I'd really think of how to use that blank slate to add detail and that will further pull this design from a "solitaire" erng.

Oh my, there are thousands of ways to change a hammer finish. The shape the hammer, the size of its face, the amount of overlap, random or "patterned" and more. Here are a few. I love hammering and satin fishing.

I'd start with a satin and then have the hammering added if you want, as removing the hammered finish is very time and metal consuming (as me how I know!).

When the hammer gets large, they can be called faceted.

LOVE this hammered finish.

I’m going to go for a 4mm rose gold band, like my wedding band. See photo.

I adore applying textured finishes. Its so satisfying to see such a visible transformation. I have about 5 hammers and about a dozen custom made (by my husband) tools just for working on silver. For such a deep, crisp design like the one you liked, they probably use a steel tool that is made by them (think of a shaped nail or steel rod). So, make sure the person you hire for the finish shows you actual examples of that finish they have produced. I mostly only play with silver and copper these days as you can't mix tools and I don't have the time to play and the space for separate gold and silver areas...:(2

Please post what you end up with. Bonus points if you can describe the tool they use.

Thanks for the advice. Will defo ask for them to show me examples of the hammer work they have done.

Beautiful stone...I like satin or brushed finish. I'm usually a sucker for texture but I worry that the hammered look with the rose gold with the silver collet
setting might just be too much going on for me. A picture/CAD could change my mind though:cheeky:!

I’m inclined to agree. I’m think I’m going to have a standard band THEN get it hammered if I feel it needs.

GAWD that is amazing :love: handshots and more pictures please! good call on keeping the band plain. There's a lot of texture in the collet frame and the facets of the stone and a smooth band lets the stone be the star (as it should be)

As much as I love the setting, I think I am going to have the bezel reset into a wider and thicker band. I feel it’s too engagement-ring like.

What do you guys think?

It looks great in itself as a piece of jewellery :) but I think I would agree that a chunkier band would suit your hand more.

Hope it won't cost too much to re-do it!

It is absolutely stunning! I do agree that it would be better with a wider band/shank. More masculine.

I will wear it for a while but I definitely will be having it re-set. Need to be happy with it!
