We bought my stone today--YAY

, post to follow on that but thanks to all of you for the wonderful advice.

now im on a quest for a setting. here's the issue: after trying on about a million settings i sort of decided that superfine micropave (like you might see in a richard landi or a michael b setting), which is what i originally wanted, is TOO fine for my tastes. i still want small melee, but i think i prefer the stones to be of a size where you can actually almost make out that you're looking at a very very tiny round diamond (as opposed to just seeing undefined "sparklies" everywhere).

i tried on a setting today that i liked very much, it had about a 3mm band, and one melee stone fit just perfectly width-wise into the side. (although there was a very very thin border of plain platinum on the sides, which the stones were nestled between.) so essentially the setting looked like a single-file row of tiny tiny diamonds. does this make any sense? i hope so.

anyway the problem im having is that i don't know what size the stones were so i don't know how to explain to my setting guy what i want. the response to chrono's post on melee today said that the dimension of a five pointer is about 2.4mm, so does it sound like the ones i liked may have been around that size (to fit onto the 3mm band, along with the thin border and the metalwork around the stones)? or smaller? i could have sworn the guy who showed me the setting said that it was composed of "half pointers to one and a half pointers", but given the dimensions just discussed, how could that be right? (the range in sizes is explained by the fact that the pave was much smaller on certain thinner parts of the setting, like on the side, but im not concerned with those. just the ones on the shank.)

id also appreciate a sense of what size melee (i know it will be a range) are generally used in micropave vs. in pave.

thanks--sorry im so clueless but i REALLY appreciate the advice.

Oh, now I see what all those measurements are all about. I've also been looking at melees and I was quoted a approx. 0.07 melee that once set will be in a 3mm band. 7 stone ring of 0.53 ctw = 0.07 ct each in a shared prong setting. I'm not sure what size melees you looked at because the setting is probably different but then again, I doubt it'll be very much different in size.

Can your setting guy make a recommendation to you? He might know best what the limits are for a practical setting (one that would stand everyday wear-and-tear), and what his limits are for setting these tiny stones. I think that the width of your band would determine the maximum size he could set, but I don't know for sure about that.

I wish I could help with your melee/pave questions, but I know nuffin' about that. I did however want to CONGRATULATE you on the awesome purchase. After the way you've talked about it, I can't wait to see pics!!!

CONGRATULATIONS on getting your beautiful cushion!!

Which appraiser did you end up using?

thanks guys. i'll definitely ask leon (at this point i think im going to use him, although now that i have the stone im SOOOO anxious and dont want to wait 4-6 weeks!) what size stones to use. i think if i say, i want about a 3mm band, and i want it the stones to fit one across, he'd be able to figure it out, right?

i just think that the slightly larger pave looks sparklier and a tad more antique, which is the look im going for with the cushion.

thanks so much for sharing my excitement about the stone--i really love it.

i'll post separately about this later but mark at engagementringsdirect was so great about helping me to find it. i will attempt to post pics later, but it wont be as exciting without the setting!!!

honestly, i shudder to think what i would have ended up with without the help of everyone on this board. so thank you, thank you, thank you!

Pssst... reena... did you see this thread???

Leave it to me to make trouble. You SURE you don't want to wait for THE MAN to make the setting. You might be setting yourself up for disappointment. The time will fly by and you'll be SURE you're getting exactly the setting you want...no?

oh, no, MMM you're totally right. i am going to wait for the Man, and for that exact reason too. i know myself and i'll have total remorse if i dont.

i was just sayin that sometimes a little devil pops up on my right shoulder and says JUST SET IT! NOW! THEN YOU CAN WEAR IT!

Q--you've definitely got me down!

that jb starr ring is pretty much exactly what i want if i go with the bezel setting. (ive seen it in person though and as i recall it's very ornate from the side, which i didn't like.) now the only question now is, bezel or no bezel? sigh.

Congtatulations, Reena!!! It is so exciting!!!

I am sure whatever you choose will be awesome...I'm no help--I love all the settings. And I am sure the "Man" will do exquisite work for you...all his pieces are truly extraordinary. And although i have NO patience, wait for what you want--it's worth it.

While you can't tell from my spelling and poor grammar, I'm going on 6 years myself. (still a newbie)
The funny thing is, that complaint has about the same legal significance as my real ones...

Nan, don't stress:

CARPE CEREVISI (Seize the beer)

SONA SI LATINE LOQUERIS (Honk if you speak Latin)

I have no idea if these are right!!! LOL
It means always wear under wear...hehehehe

And Nan, your husband says this one all the time:

PREHENDE UXOREM MEAM, SIS!

Reena: I'm sorry...I'll stop...last one...you MUST post pix to shut me up...

SI HOC SIGNUM LEGERE POTES, OPERIS BONI IN REBUS LATINUS ALACRIBUS ET FRUCTUOSIS POTIRI POTES:
(If you can read this sign, you can get a good job in the fast-paced, high-paying world of Latin) LOL

Phonetically, that is... always where under where...

See, you were close Nan!

Now I'm gonna have to think a moment about that last one...
