Stolen E-ring

After 8 years of waiting, my boyfriend decided to surprise me with an E-ring. He ordered it a month ago & picked it up Saturday from the jeweler and hid it in the center console of his truck. Monday morning he awoke to find his truck window smashed and his work laptop stolen from under the front of driver seat and...gasp...sob...my ring stolen. Horrible, horrible timing and luck. I hold the renter's insurance so he had to tell me about it and ruin the surprise part also. So he's/we are now out a huge chunk of change because he was waiting to insure the ring until I saw it and was happy with it and my renter's insurance only covers a thousand toward jewelry. Because he's the perfect man, he insists I get whatever ring I want to replace it, no matter the cost. The catch is that he wants me to replace it asap (I don't care about not having a ring, in my mind we are already married!).

I've been dreaming of an oval e-ring for the past few months. I know from this forum that finding a satisfactory one (minimal bowtie) can be a challenge so I was wondering if anyone out there could help me look. I'd like at least a carat, at worst H color, VS2 (maybe SI1?), minimal bowtie, all round nice looking oval. Max price around $8,000, obviously lower would be much better seeing he's already spent $8500 and I feel guilty spending more. ;( This all just sucks because we both should be so happy yet this whole thing has definitely darkened the engagement story. Please help!

I'm so sorry to hear this!

I'm so sorry to hear this!! How completely awful ;(

Can I ask if there is any chance at all of finding the thief and recovering the laptop and the ring? I'm wondering if you might perhaps have reason to hold off on buying another ring...

If not, may I offer an opinion? Instead of replacing what was stolen with something so similar that you can't help but associate the two, what do you think about choosing an eternity band or something instead? Something completely different with which to celebrate the engagement, and save the oval for a different occasion - marriage, anniversary, baby... just a thought! ::)

Oh, my!!! That is one of the worst stories I have ever heard here! It is a super hard lesson to learn that valuables should never be left in a vehicle. It almost sounds as if someone was watching him leave the jeweler, because what are the odds that it would just happen that his truck would be broken into the weekend he left the ring in there??? Or did anyone else know?

Honestly, I think Good Old Gold is the best in finding fancy cut stones and especially one like an oval that can be so hard to find. Call them, tell them your story, and I am sure they will do all they can to find you a great stone at the best possible price. They will call in a few stones for you and even take a video so you can compare them for yourself.

I am really sorry. I wish they could find the thief. I am sure you were told to check pawn shops and that kind of thing. I really hope you get a miracle and the ring is found.

I know, I am sick over it. He bought the ring at a store an hour away. Only his best friend and sister knew. It seems to be just horrible luck. I figured good old gold seemed like the best option. I will contact them. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is awful. I'm so sorry that it happened. Good luck for the ring search and congratulations on finding the man you want to marry

Fully concur.
OP: you seem to have an amazing relationship. Give this story a new twist; one that you both feel good about. The ring is a symbol. Don't associate it with the theft.

Oh, I am so sorry! I can see both POV's-getting just a band and then the ER at a later date so not to rush into any decision BUT if your heart wants an ER then that's what you should get. Just choose a diamond with a good upgrade policy from a great vendor (I like the GOG recommendations for one) and you should be good to go.

Again while this is heartbreaking don't let it define your engagement or the ring. You guys will get through this challenge and move on to happier and better times for sure. Congrats on your upcoming engagement and all the best!

First question that pops in my mind - Is this not covered under the truck's insurance??

I think if it was, we'd all be storing our jewelry in our vehicles instead of buying jewelry policies! But I wish it was so for her sake!

Ack! So sorry to hear this and I hope you get exactly the ring you want!

I am not sure how you would feel about this, but I would consider posting a "no questions asked" reward on Craigslist or something similar. The resale value of rings on the illegal market is not great, and you might be able to beat whatever a sleazy fence is offering, especially as you are looking at starting over with a new ring. An $8,000 ring would probably be sold for well under $1,000. For that matter it's worth scanning e-bay, Craigslist, and the local pawn shops yourself.

You would still be out a substantial amount with the reward, but you'd be much better off than if you paid another $8,000 (less $1,000 insurance) for a comparable ring.

Wow, There's been so much going on I failed to check back in for a few days! That's what working 12hr shifts does I guess. I'm happy (ok, ecstatic) to tell you all they caught the thief & I have my ring back! My fiancé (first time writing that!) spent hours emailing every jewelry store & pawn shop around. It paid off! Less than 2 hrs after he sent a picture to a family owned store, the thief walked in with my ring! Get this, the store was right next to the police station! Whew, what a crazy week!
Unfortunately, now there's a whole new slew of problems & I am really going to need your guy's help. I think I should probably create a new post though huh?
Thank you everyone for being so welcoming & supportive! I'm so glad I decided to post all this, it definitely helped calm me down!

Great news!!! :appl:

Waiting for the next installment...

Aspen, that is wonderful news!!! I am so happy for the both of you! May you wear your new ER in health and happiness always. :appl:
