So, I have an appointment to go and look at diamonds and settings at my jeweler on Saturday. I have asked them to pull some round stones, "cut cornered square step cuts" and square radiants.

Now that I have the go-ahead from my husband to change my engagement ring, I am starting to feel sentimental about having an asscher :p

I am wondering if I would like the "cut cornered square step cut" which looks more like an RA, or a square radiant to keep the shape but add sparkle, or just go with an RB to add that sparkle AND size.

Or, maybe I should just change the setting and keep my current asscher ...

The jeweler is having a trunk show this weekend, and the people from Martin Flyer will be there - they showed them the Tiffany deco setting that I like and the Martin Flyer people said they would custom-make it for me if I like.

I know that I really jsut need to go look at the different stones with different settings on my finger & see what looks best, but it''s so hard to decide - I want one of each!

I know it''s my decision, but since I am still so undecided, I am wanting to reach out to my fellow diamond-lovers to see what you would pick - any suggestions?

I am going to keep my channel-set asscher band regardless of what I do with the ring ...

Vesper,
Since you are undecided, I think you are doing the right thing in lining up your favourite cuts (all well cut stones) side by side. It''s not going to be easy trying to decide but this way you can see the pros and cons of each type of cut and decide which one appeals to your eyes the most.

vesper, I''m not much help because I LOVE your set. I love how the ering looks with your wband. I just love the whole look. But if you''re still not sure, it cant hurt to take a look, right? You dont have to decide right now. You can take as long as you want. Why not STOP wearing your ering for a month and see if you miss it? Someone here said to another poster, "how would you feel if you lost your ring and couldn''t replace it?" Have you asked yourself about that? I would hate for you to regret replacing such a lovely, classic set.

Thanks for yoru feedback guys!

I agree that I shouldn''t do anything hasty - I just want to go & try a bunch of stuff on & see what happens. I will try to take some pics to post as well.

Maybe I am just bored with the solitiare setting, and replacing the engagment ring setting will do the trick. Either way, it will be fun to go & try a bunch of different things on & see what I think about some different looks ...

Vesperg, you may remember that i have a sq emerald cut that is about the same dimensions (mine is 2.02ct, 7.3 x 7.3) with a very similar setting. I purchased my stone close to a year ago and started feeling--well, I guess it was shrinkage---I just was not totally satisfied. I started looking at rb''s and wanted to trade, but the jeweler that I was using required a 100% trade-up, so that was out. I ended up buying an additional lower color rb (avatar) that is 8.7 x 8.7mm. The funny thing, is immediately I fell back in love with the asscher. Honestly, when I hold the 2 rings side by I can hardly see a size difference---even though it is a full 1.4 mm. I am happy and feel fortunate to have both rings, but I guess that if I could do it all over again I''d buy one awesome stone instead of 2 stones with 2 settings--kwim? Are you able to do some sort of trade-in or trade up?

Are you going to keep your current stone? Or trading it?
.... if you''re not keeping your current stone, really think about what it is you don''t like about it. If it''s size... then check out the RB''s -- biggest bang for the buck. In my experience with diamond shopping, I knew I liked the 9mm size of the round on my finger (used it as a guide) -- now when shopping for asschers, I know the stone needs to be at least 9mm to satisfy my size needs.

Do you like the step cuts or do you want more of those small flashes of fire/sparkle you get with a brillant stone?

What about a cushion? They have the antique feel, kinda square, look big face up and give off big sparkle.... ??

Good luck and go with your gut - you''ll know when you see the "right" one.. whether it''s a new stone or your current set.

Hi guys,

I will be trading in the current stone, so it''s not an option to get a second. I think that both size & sparkle are issues, which is why the RB is looking really appealing to me. I have always been a "step cut girl," but I feel like the asscher always looks smudgeed, and an BR maybe wouldn''t have that problem.

Plus, instead of having a 2.25 carat asscher that looks like a 1.4 carat RB, I could have a 2 ct RB that LOOKS like a 2 carat stone!

That''s the problem with the square radiants - even though I love the sparkle, you''re still losing a lot of size ...

Maybe I''m one of those people who should only have a fancy shape in a huge cocktail ring for occasional use, and a sparkly RB for every day wear ...

then if it''s size, go with the round... remember DSS usually sets in.....RB''s are always sparkly (never smudged) and look great even when dirty... and when clean... WOW! Sparkle, sparkle, sparkle.

Check out the videos on GOG:

there are some good ones comparing fire, brightness, scintillation... good luck!

This is a story you''re telling yourself. And if you can''t see it any other way -- they you should prolly just switch. I can''t even IMAGINE going around thinking my 1.5 ct asscher looks like a x.xx (insert other cut here)??? And then FOCUSING on that? WHY? What can be gained? There is always going to be "something" to focus on negatively -- if you figure out how to stop focusing on the absolute worst possible "story" about things ... you''ll end up happy.

Your 2.25 asscher LOOKS like a 2.25 asscher. EXACTLY like one.

I love love love your set. I truly wanted either a cushion or asscher but we could only afford 1/2 carat e-ring and so those were out because they''re deeper.

What type of person are you? Some people agonize over decisions but once they are made the person is fine. Others immediate what they gave up. DH is the first type, I''m the 2nd. I can''t stop focusing on my decision even after it''s made.

you can''t convince yourself to love something you don''t, no matter how much others love it. I think taking a look at what else is out there and seeing if there is something out there you like better is a good idea. rounds are the most popular stone for a reason and there is nothing wrong with wanting the most size for your $, lovers of fancy''s like asschers and cushions know and can accept that they face up smaller their other stones but would choose them over a larger round. sounds like you''d rather have the spread and sparkle. let us know how your visit with the jeweler goes..

I have to agree with Deco, here. I never really thought about how my stone faced up until I found PS, because when I was choosing the engagement ring I didn''t notice my 1.5 carat asscher to be any smaller than other 1.5 carat shapes. In fact, I recently went to 4 different high-end B&Ms to compare my 1.5 carat asscher with 1.5 carat round brilliants and didn''t notice a size difference at all. Yes, I realize my stone is measured as 6.5 x 6.5 or so, but when I measured it diagonally, it was about 9mm, which obviously makes a visual impact.

Anyway, I FULLY support you in whatever you decide to do because you should be happy with your ring--but my point is that if you''re finding flaws in your ring (even if they only exist in your head :) then you aren''t going to be happy. If a RB is for you, then that''s what you should get and if you really miss your asscher, you can focus on getting another down the road.

Keep us updated on your decision!

I think mrssalvo makes a great point. Everyone can post how much they love your ring, but ultimately it''s YOU that has to be happy! Diamonds are huge investments -- and you should be excited...doing backflips ...about your wedding set. The fact that you are not sure what to do, leads me to believe that there is something else out there for you that you will love even more...

I knew my loose stone wasn''t for me -- even after everyone said to "keep" -- my gut said it wasn''t the right one. As much as I tried to convince myself... but why try to convince yourself of anything? That reaction in itself means something it not right.
