Hello!
I am very new to this forum, actually I joined today! I have tried to poke and read as much as I could in a few hours but would love to ask you experts a question. I appologize in advance if it is very amature-ish or has already been addressed.....
I have a large stone, 35.68 carats. I was told by two different jewelers that it is glass but the third one I took it to said it is a spinel. It is light blue in color but very bright. It looks fake to me but I don't know anything about colored stones.
Does anyone know what a spinel could even be worth? Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Tabitha

Without seeing it in person, no one can really tell, but if is spinel, it's probably synthetic. There are lots of large light blue gems that are synthetic spinel. They used to be sold a lot as aqua substitute.

Would be an easy one for gemologists.

Unfortunately, it's like saying I have a red car without any identifying marks (nameplate). Please tell me the make, model, and age of the car. There is no one who can tell you what it is based on the very little information you have. It is best to have a gemmologist run simple RI and SG tests on it. He/she can tell you the answer in less than a minute.

I've never seen a light blue spinel, sounds unlikely. Poorly saturated blue spinels would appear paler but the hue still not what I'd call a light blue; gray could be the main color with a bluish modifier; I suppose someone might see that as a light blue. Good advice above to ask a gemologist to run a couple tests; sounds like it's not a spinel. ;(

Light blue in that size could easily be synthetic Spinel, a minute with a refractometer would likely answer the question.

Pictures please! We love to ogle! :cheeky:
