I started off thinking I only needed to think about the 4Cs and did some reading on them. Luckily I found this site and realized that there is a lot more than just that (i.e. pavilion and crown being the 2 major ones). As a rookie, I’m still baffled by the GIA’s non-inclusion of this information.

I’m looking for a round diamond for $9,000 obo and am pretty much set on these parameters.
Cut – Ideal AGS, Excellent GIA (either way table, depth, pavilion and crown must fall inside Holloway cut advisor <2). I do not want anything but an excellent cut.
Carat – 1.15-1.30
Color – F-G (her preference)
Clarity – VS1-VS2 (just personal preference. I know I could go lower and get larger stone)

I need help on the following parameters. Is there something in that I can or should change?
Symmetry – ID (AGS) or EX (GIA) (I have read in the forum that I could do down to VG. Any suggestions?)
Polish – ID or EX (I have read in the forum that I could do down to VG. Any suggestions?)
Florescence – None or faint (Any suggestions?)
Girdle – Thin to slightly thick.
Cutlet – As long as not large.

My question is what am I “over-doing” or am I doing good? My goal is to get a stone with good fire and brilliance for an anal fiancée.

Thanks again everyone,
JP

Jorge,

Seems like you know exactly what you want.

Here is one, (check the link to the report for more info) and your parameters are not too restricting, so there should be plenty of these around.

Enjoy your search... and just wait until you have to find your anal fiancée the perfect ring... and the perfect way of proposing to her...

We suggest keeping the proportions of the diamond you seek within the following range for optimum performance:

Total depth: 59 - 61.8%

Table: 54 - 56%

Crown angle: 34.3 - 34.8 degrees

Pavilion angle: 40.6 - 40.9 degrees

Girdle: 1.0% thin up to 1.8% medium

Culet: GIA none or AGS pointed

Polish: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal

Symmetry: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal

Other combinations of proportions will yield essentially the same results, but can be a bit more challenging to decipher. For instance, a steeper crown angle of say 35.3 degrees combined with a shallower pavilion angle of something like 40.4 degrees and vice versa shallower crown angle with a steeper pavilion angle...

Sure, you could probably 'get away' with Very Good polish and symmetry, but with Excellent / Ideal so readily available for round brilliant ideal cut diamonds why should you? After all, as Excellent / Ideal becomes 'the norm' the diamonds with only VG / VG polish and symmetry become less and less desireable within the industry... Buy the best diamond that is available at the moment because cutting technology is advancing so fast that pretty soon we're going to be advancing as fast as computer chips

I will chime in with 2 others found in the cut quality search:

1.23 G VS2 H&A AGS 0 HCA: 1EX $7900 GoodOldGold.Com

1.26 G VS1 H&A AGS 0 HCA: 1.4EX $8700 GoodOldGold.Com

They are brokered stones so Jonathan won't have info on them on his site, but the specs look good from the cut quality search info. Call him and see what else he can find for you....or look at the other stones posted by other posters.

From what I have seen, it's actually hard to find the excellently cut stones in the ranges from 1.25-1.50 around here...the online vendors seem to have more of smaller and larger.

So best of luck in the search!!
