Hello! Some of you were helping out with my solar system engagement ring until I hit a wall with space. Thread here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/how-much-finger-real-estate-do-i-have.201174/
So, I finally made the tough call of making the gas planets smaller. I bought 2 Montana sapphires from Gem Art Services to serve as Uranus and Neptune. The Uranus is light blue, 3.75mm. The Neptune is darker blue, 3.5mm. They are pretty close in color to the original, larger, Uranus and Neptune.
So now, the line up is this:
Mercury: 1.5mm white sapphire
Venus: 2mm yellow sapphire
Earth: 3.5mm blue cabochon sapphire
Mars: 2.5ishmm ruby (this is larger of the two options. I think it looks better, but there is also 1.7mm orange red sapphire)
Jupiter: 7mm gray/pink spinel
Saturn: ????
Uranus: 3.75mm light blue sapphire
Neptune: 3.5mm dark blue sapphire
Pluto: 1.4mm Alex
I'll post a picture from my phone in my next post.
Obviously nothing is to size or even relative size, but I've decided that's ok. I think if I can get a Saturn that's smaller than the Jupiter but bigger (even a little) than Uranus, I'll be in good shape in terms of finger real estate.
That said, it has not been easy to find a small catseye! It would be turned on its side so that the eye went east-west. Ideally, in that orientation, it would be "taller" than the Uranus (3.75mm) and shorter than Jupiter (7mm). I'd also want it to be as a "short" as possible. This kinda tricky, as most eyes are oriented north-south on the longer side.
Here are some contenders:
A
http://www.starruby.in/store/alexandrite-cats-eye/0-40-carat-marvelous-alexandrite-cat-s-eye-from-orissa-india
This one seems like it has a somewhat diffuse eye, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for Saturn. At 5.13 x 3.81, it'll be a little taller than Uranus. Maybe too long? Seems to have a good color change. Shape and cut seems little wonky, but I don't necessarily dislike the "organic" or "rough" look. I wish I could be assured that's good "organic" and not bad "wonky," but that's all subjective. I'm weirdly drawn to it. $150
B
http://www.starruby.in/store/alexandrite-cats-eye/0-42-carat-green-to-red-color-change-alexandrite-cat-s-eye
4.45 x 3.73, so a little shorter than the Uranus on its side (not ideal, but not a big deal), but less wide, so will take up less space on the finger, width wise. Better color and color-change, less wonky, but over $100 more expensive. So, maybe a safe bet? But is it worth that much more than the other options? Weirly, A and C speak to me more? $263
C
http://www.starruby.in/store/alexandrite-cats-eye/0-45-carat-alexandrite-cat-s-eye-with-strong-chatoyance
Barely qualifies as an alexandrite IMO, but more a grayish greenish chrysoberyl with some very slight shift. But that's ok! I wish I could assured, as with A, that it's a pretty gray and not a blah gray, because I do like gray, but again, it's all subjective. Closer to round, 4.80 x 4.98, which is pretty good size. I don't *think* too big? Seems like it has a better eye. Least expensive. $101
D
http://www.starruby.in/store/alexandrite-cats-eye/0-72-carat-alexandrite-cat-s-eye-with-prominent-color-change
Most expensive at $288. Higher carat weight, but still only 4.33 x 4.28. Good eye. Good color and change. Maybe worth it over B?
I have read all the threads about Starruby.in, including that they seem to photoshop (which the owner admitted, for "size comparison"). I think I'd be comfortable going with them for this project, mostly because of their inventory (which NO ONE else has), but also because I think, if something is a cool color (not necessarily ideal, just not ugly), is a catseye, and is the right size, I'm honestly OK with it. There is a lot going on in this ring, and I don't think the Saturn will make or break it.
There are also some chrysoberyls at Gemselect. They all sort of look the same to me? Kinda of that grayish-greenish color. Which I like! A bit better prices than E. Here are thes ones that seem to have the best dimensions-- that is, when turned on their sides, are taler or close to as tall as Uranus, but then are shorter in lenght, so take up less space on the hand:
E
http://www.gemselect.com/chrysoberyl-cats-eye/chrysoberyl-cats-eye-195985.php
$91, 5.06x4.7, but is described as 'opaque,' which could be a bad sign
F
http://www.gemselect.com/chrysoberyl-cats-eye/chrysoberyl-cats-eye-267961.php
$113, 5x3.72, described as a "translucent," which is good even if it is a bit shorter than Uranus
G
http://www.gemselect.com/chrysoberyl-cats-eye/chrysoberyl-cats-eye-267969.php
$90, 5x4.5, also translucent. Perhaps the best of the three in terms of size, quality, and price?
What do you guys think? Where else should I look?
