I''m in need of a little help, and I thought I would appeal to the ingenuity of the people on this board. I have had a ring for almost 2 years now, and I have been pretty miserable about it the whole time. I will admit that I am pretty picky, but I feel like we''ve encountered so much bad workmanship. 4 rings and almost $3,000 later, I''m still unhappy with my situation. I thought I''d see if you guys have any good ideas about what I should do from here on out. I''d like to keep my diamond, but buying a new setting (unless it''s very cheap) is out of the question. We don''t really have any more money to spend on a ring. I almost don''t care what I have anymore, as long as it doesn''t have major problems. My wedding band, by the way, seems to be problem free. I''ve thought of a few options that don''t cost much money, but none are great. I''d like to see what you guys can come up with. Here are the ideas I have had so far:

1. Buy a very cheap setting and have my half-carat princess mounted in that. I have now found a jeweler (he did some work on my current ring) that I trust completely.
2. Have the wedding ring unsoldered from the engagement ring and just wear that.
3. Buy a plain gold wedding band and wear that.

Any other inexpensive ideas? This is driving me crazy!

Thanks so much for your help.

I think this should be moved to the Rocky Talk forum.

Could you post pictures of your current ring(s)? Maybe something from it can be salvaged.

hi srjacquier :)

this forum is fine to post some photos and we''ll give you a heap of ideas how you should proceed.

the folks here are pretty knowledgeable in what sort of ring designs are available, and are excellent at making suggestions!

iota is right, tho, in that we will need photos. even something taken with a phone, if you don''t have a camera that will do the job, would be great. and perhaps you could let us know more about what it is you don''t like?

looking forward to hearing back from you soon!

also, when you say "inexpensive" what is your budget? So sorry about all the issues with the settings

Well, by inexpensive, I''m meaning $200-300 total, if that. I mostly just don''t want to keep pouring money down the drain, you know? You can see why I''m a little bit overwhelmed. . . Thanks for your willingness to help! I will try to post some pictures very soon. I think I''m mostly bothered by the crown. It''s a princess and it''s set in chevron prongs. They''re extremely un-uniform. How uniform do prongs usually look? I know it wasn''t a problem with my first diamond (a marquise), but it''s been a problem with both princess diamonds that I''ve had.

here is one of my favorite by winkjones.com he states only $235 not including head, not sure but you could check with him.

D&T, I just had to say that I LOVE that setting! I say go for an inexpensive setting like this one that D&T suggested. It''s simple and classic, you can''t go wrong.

I really like it a lot... I wish (maybe haven't really asked him...lol) would let me reset my first ering which is a princess I am in love with double prongs lately

Srjacquier88- if you are really unhappy with the head - or the whole ring itself?, then just replace the whole thing, just getting the head completely redone, it maybe will cost as much as just getting an inexpensive setting like suggested have you asked your jeweler on the cost? time, labor if you were just to replace the head? I once got a quote for just replacing my head and it was going to cost about $180 (but there are different variables) and my ring was only about $375 to begin with. Anyhow hope this somewhat help.

D&T, have to say - i love this ring.

srjacquier, who has set your ring in the past? if it''s the head that you hate so much, and the way th stone has been set so unevenly, is it because you''ve been using poor jewelers? a good jeweler/setter should be able to help you out here. if it''s the prongs that you hate so much, they might even be able to do this as a repair, rather than a completely new ring.

just a thought...

i''d definitely split them, tho, so at least you can wear your wedding ring alone if you dislike your e-ring so much.

just a thought.....

oh gosh, i went through the same thing with my e-ring, but i forked up the cash to get the ring i wanted

you need to ask yourself if you will be happy going with the cheaper option or if you will continue to dislike your ring, i''m on my third setting and although i wasted my money on the first two, i''m glad that i finally have the setting of my dreams, i pondered going with a cheaper setting and keeping my diamond, but i knew i wouldn''t be satisfied with it

you will be wearing the ring for the rest of your life, so i say, it''s an investment towards your happiness, look for a ring that you really love (the eyecandy forum helps) and go out and try rings on, maybe you''ll find the setting for you, then we here at ps can try to find it or something similar for cheaper if need be

in the meantime, i would have your rings unsoldered so at least you can wear the wedding ring

My princess cut have very uniform prongs, I recently had the head replaced and it cost me $140, that was at a store in the mall, I am in the midwest, so it could be more of less depending on where you live. I think the most inexpensive thing would be just to replace the head if that is the problem or just replace the entire setting using a very simple solitare setting.
