Hi there, I saw a stunning ring the other day, a lady was wearing a huge aquamarine with what looked like marquise sidestones in a butterfly shape. (I was viewing from a distance so I’m just guessing.) I’m trying to find something similar online. The closest I can get is this Harry Winston ring (the last aquamarine pictured) but the ‘butterfly’ sidestone here are too big and overpowering, hers were more subtle. With the Tiffany ring, (the first ring pictured) her sidestones were larger. Has anyone seen anything like this setting that they could point me to? It doesn’t have to be an aquamarine, I’m more interested in the setting than the centre stone. Thanks!

Sorry, I should add that the reason I’m asking is because I’ve just bought this oval tourmaline and I’m wondering if it’s possible to get a similar setting to work with my different shaped stone.

Anything is possible if you go with custom setting. Don't think it's mass produced.

You won’t find a “stock” setting like that to fit your lovely tourmaline.
You will need to go the “custom” route and of course that way you can have exactly what you want. Marquis diamonds of decent size (8) is going to be quite expensive.
That design could work with coloured gems if you wanted to be a bit different. I can see purple amethyst side stones looking amazing alongside that green

Oh, I’m not after a stock setting. What I’m after is a design that’s closer to what I saw to help me better decide how to create my own! It will definitely have to be custom made. To basically firm it up in my own mind, because I only saw it the one time and I’m hoping it exists somewhere out in the internet!

I have DK working on a setting for an aquamarine for me based on two 1950’s Van Cleef and Arpels settings. Mine is obviously scaled down from these. I would try searching Van Cleef and Arpels also. There are some lovely vintage settings out there for inspiration.

My absolute favorite deco designer is Raymond Yard (see pic). I would google the name for more design inspiration, but an oval would also look great in the settings you’re after.

I've always been a fan of athenaworth's one

I don't know though how it would look if you tried to scale down the side stones -- and it will be an expensive setting if you keep the side stones in proportion for the tourmaline you have picked. I worry a little whether you will really be happy in the long run if you sink a lot of money into the setting (as the center may have a slight window (although it is hard to be sure from the picture because the background colour is green), and some people love that and some find in the long term it isn't for them.). I have to say have you seen mc2? It is gorgeous and they have some stuff which makes me think of the general asthetic of your setting. I will see if I can find the link for you, for inspiration purposes.

You also might have a nice time flicking through the instagram of some jewelers you can use like david klass.

I know these are inexpensive compared to what you have in mind, but I thought they might help you visualize the look with an oval stone.

David Klass made my setting. Though my tourmaline is a different shape, I hope this helps you decide what proportions you want for yours.

You’ve both given me a lot to think about. JPie, I really like your setting and I think the proportions work really well. I’m going to look further into the jewellers you’ve both suggested and see if they give me any more ideas.
