So I am looking at some rings now and I am trying first to decide between shapes, Mainly round and princess cut and curious on cushion and acher cause they interest me. Can you tell me some pros and cons of each cut. Also I have a budget of 3,000 max and I want a nice dimond but most importly I need a great setting I was gonna get a vera wang from sales its this one
http://www.zales.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13315566&fd=Ring&size=96&fv=Style%2FRing&ff=PAD

However I can do better from what you guys are saying, so Help me because well I need it and I am diamond dumb lol. She loves this vintage setting type the sapphires were something I really liked alot so any help there would be good. I would perfer to buy from the same site, I am looking at Blue nile alot cause of financing they offer. I like james allen too but i don't know about there financing or if they have it. Any ideas would be great.

I am begging for your guys help now please rescue me from making a bad ring choice.

Also on a side note what do people think of a sapphire as the center stone?

I would call Good Old Gold. They carry the Gabriel bridal line, which has a TON of vintage style settings. In your budget, I would stick with an ideal cut round brilliant. Or an August Vintage round. Rounds will face up larger than princesses, cushions, and especially asschers.

Vera Wang's settings aren't well loved here - they have quality and durability issues. And the diamonds in the setting are H-I color and SI2 clarity - they may (likely) have visible inclusions.

I think a sapphire center would be lovely, but if you also use sapphires as accents you need to make sure they match, etc.

I posted this awhile ago on your other thread, but this is a steal of a deal for diamond and setting:

I think they have 6 months free financing and then it starts having interest. They are a family owned jewelry store in NY and many of us have bought from them.

Do not do a sapphire for the center stone or even as an accent stone unless it is something she specifically has told you she wants.

I do not like good old gold there website is to hard to navigate and it just dosnt seem that reputable also she loves sapphires so I want them as a accent for sure. Every time I go to good old gold I can't see settings.

1) they're VERY reputable. 2) their settings catalog is not as large on their website, sure, but they stock a massive selection so contact them. 3) they can absolutely get great sapphires for sides/accents.

Well, I don't know of one single jeweler who is MORE reputable than them! (There are several others I could recommend, as well.) Their site is not hard to navigate if you understand where to find things. You have to go to the website of the setting dealers because they offer thousands of settings. Gabriel and Co has been mentioned many times already as having affordable antique style settings. It is a MUCH better idea to get the sapphire accents on the wedding band if she really wants those. It is going to limit you tremendously if you have to have sapphires on the engagement ring.

Don't judge GOG by their website. Johnathan (Rhino on PS) is one of the best in the biz and there aren't many others who have done more to educate the diamond-buying community than him. A quick look at GOG's YouTube channel is just the tip of the iceberg.

I thrito the GOG suggestions. I have a beautiful pear and Gabriel setting from them. I spoke to Marie and she helped me find the perfect Gabriel setting. When I looked at the Gabriel site I had trouble finding a setting because all the settings were shown with a round. She found me several that could hold a pear and made the whole process painless!!! Very good email communication as well as by phone! I'm saving my pennies right now for AVC stones for earrings, so I will be a repeat customer.
They have links to several setting catalogs/ websites that can be somewhat daunting, but also quite exciting, you have access to thousands of settings. I suggest an email and let them find you a few settings and go from there.
The Vera ring will not hold up, I have a friend who got a Vera Wang Ering and seriously lost a stone a month till she finally scrapped it for a Verragio.

As a competitor of theirs I have to tell you that they are very reputable and respected. You do not have to buy there, but it is grossly unfair to question their reputation because you do not like their site.

I do believe they're working on their website. But they really are fantastic.

That was very nice of you, Wink! :))

Okay, I have found you two pretty antique style Gabriel settings with sapphires!!! yay!!!

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8990W44SA

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8988W44SA

The great news is this leaves you at least $2k for the diamond, and both of these take 5mm stones which is about a half carat. (Good Old Gold carries Gabriel settings and would have the stone set for you.)

This, in my opinion, is THE most perfect stone you could possibly put in this setting:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9070/

This would be a ring that is about 1000 times better than the one from Zales, seriously.

And they both have matching wedding bands that could be purchased later.

WOW. I love that first setting. And that stone is a KNOCKOUT.

Ame, I was close to giving up on this search, but I finally found the settings with the sapphires! THEN, that AVR is on sale! I can't think of a more perfect ring for his requirements! I love it! Hope he comes back!

Great job!!! Hope OP takes your advice, love the setting finds too

I love both of the stones from GOG listed above, especially that AVR. I'll chime in to say I'm another satisfied customer of theirs and although the rest of their website is not my favorite, their diamond education information and the information they post about each stone is excellent.
