How can I figure out exactly what size stone will fit? It looks like most likely an oval will fit in there but it also looks kind of deep?
It'll be a fun project once I get it all figured out.

What type of stone are you planning to put in it?

My not very creative advice would be just to take it to a jeweler and ask them! Insinuate that you might purchase the stone from them and I would think they would be glad to help (& it wouldn''t be that hard for them to measure would it? No idea)

Good luck and can''t wait to see the finished product!

I'm not sure what type of stone I'll go with but I know I won't go with anything to spectacular because I want to stick to a lowish budget. I put a few different colored stones around the ring to get an idea of what color might be nice. There is a hessonite, a green sapphire, a dark red garnet, and what I believe is a pink tourmaline cab. Sorry if the photo is a bit dark.
I think your right I may just have to take it to a jeweler get the stone from them and have it set there ( or pretend to ).

Ooh pretty. I vote for putting in a garnet. I think there''s something about garnets and antique settings that just go hand in hand.

Garnet is good, vintage cameo would be nice too...

Kismet:
Nice idea about the garnet, you''re right, there is something old fashioned and timeless about garnets...

Innerkitten, you have such great sense of style, I''m sure you''ll pick just the right stone...but I do like warmer colors with yellow gold...
