I already have my EC, mounted in my ring, and my fiance bought it for me without any knowledge of diamonds whatsoever (as many real-world guys do). I think he did a fine job because I love the ring, it sparkles like crazy (especially when it's clean) and it's beautiful. But I've been lurking on this site for a few months now and I think I'm finally ready to find out what kind of diamond I really did get. Heh.

I'm not 100% sure I'll get all the terms right, but I'll try my best. So any opinions would be wonderful and appreciated. Just do try to be kind...

Ahem..Photos, por favor?

Is it your avatar? It looks purty!

It would probably be useful to get the crown height and depth%

The crown height and depth wasn''t available on my cert. I think because it''s a fancy and not a RB.

Any thoughts? Is it deep? Shallow? I''m just curious whether its beauty can truly be reflected in its numbers...

I also found PS after DH bought my ring and wanted to make sure it was a good diamond and he didn't get ripped off (he bought from a high-end B&M, which comforted me and made me nervous at the same time). Anyway, I realized that even if the diamond wasn't perfect, it didn't matter. I loved it. I loved the center stone, I loved the setting, I loved the way it looked on my hand, I loved the proposal, the work he'd put into getting the ring, etc.

I think that so long as you love it, nothing else matters.

Your diamond looks great! It seems to face up very white for an I and the clarity is great for an emerald cut. I don't think it's too deep. The table % is a big large, which can sometimes give it a "glassy" appearance, but I don't think yours does. I think he done good! And what's better, YOU love it!

ETA: I didn't have crown height on my asscher cut, either. I'd love that info, though.

Thanks, NewEnglandLady! You are absolutely right in every way. And no, I won''t be trading it in. I suppose this post is my effort to better understand the details of cut and how it changes the look of a diamond, using my own diamond as an example. I am addicted to this site and I want to learn about diamonds, just out of sheer interest and education, I suppose. Perhaps even for in ten or fifteen years if my husband and I decide to upgrade my diamond, I''ll know a little better how to get a great deal....KWIM?

here''s a photo - I have a terribly old camera with no macro option on it. Christmas is coming, though...

I absolutely understand--I went through the same exact thing :) You have a beautiful stone and a stunning ring, you should feel WONDERFUL about it!

*bump*

is this a weird question??

Not a weird question ... but a less *effective* question than if, say, you had a Round Brilliant stone. Emeralds are hard to judge by #s alone. What matters is how beautiful it looks IN PERSON.

From the one bigger picture I can say it looks GORGEOUS to me! *shrug*

ETA: it seems like a WISE purchase as well ... getting just under the 1ct mark - but with nice spread & setting in a halo which give an overall larger impression for the ring. The pave is a nice contrast to the linear EC, and adds overall sparkle to the ring. An interesting & ambitious & bold choice for a guy! Now tell the truth ... did you have a say at all??

Your diamond is stunning!!! Fancy cuts can't always be judged by the numbers, your own eyes are the best judge of beauty. Some fancy shapes which may look mediocre on paper can be insanely gorgeous in reality, but the numbers do give you a point of reference when searching.

Perhaps for knowledge purposes, do a search for emerald cuts above as there is a ton of info in the archives, also I will post a chart for you to look at which gives you some suggested desirable proportions for the EC, but remember they are a guide only. Also use the tutorial under knowledge and you can read up on EC's there. Good luck with your quest for knowledge, it is interesting and addictive stuff!

hi,

and congrats on your lovely stone! i searched and obsessed over my EC this past summer. i settled on one whose table is a bit large, don''t have crown height either...and mine is really, really sparkly and beautiful! i understand wanting to know the stats...i was lusting for a "better" one but in the end i chose the one i kept looking at at a local b & m - one that mesmerized me. and everyone did say in the end your eyes are the best judge what is "great" in a fancy cut stone, so, if you do love yours, then try not to get sucked into a numbers/stats game that might have you second-guessing your fiance''s choice of ring. just love it! now show us some close ups pictures, please! make friends with your macro lens

yours in EC admiration,

deco - I did give him the setting as my favorite, but he chose the diamond all on his own. Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate!!

lorelei - thank you for those links, I will certainly check them out. The numbers can be weird on fancies, something I didn''t have a clue about before I got my diamond.

shminbabe - Thanks for your nice comments. I honestly don''t think my old digicam even has macro. I''ve been looking for days! Can''t wait until we buy our Canon Rebel for each other for Christmas!

Thanks everyone for your compliments!

Oh I love your ring. He did a fabulous job and I think it is just beautiful!

THe most important thing is how you feel about the stone. It looks very nice to me. Congrats!
