One of the diamonds I''m considering has a "small open feather on the girdle"... is this something to be overly concerned about? I''m hoping to mount it in a semi bezel setting...

Thanks!

Hi liminal,

I think you should get your stone checked out by a qualified appraiser. Feathers that break the surface of a diamond may cause problems later in regards to having it set or if the stone is accidentally knocked the wrong way (the diamond could crack or get chipped more easily than a stone that didn't have a feather that breaks the surface of the stone).

An appraiser can tell you for sure, but what clarity grade is it? If VS2 or better, than it is unlikely to create a problem, especially in a half bezel setting, where it will be very protected.

Id pass, there are too many awesome diamonds out there that don’t have potential durability issues that it just don’t make sense to me to take the chance.
Id worry about it and a diamond is spose to be something to be happy about not worry about.

Along these lines, is this something to be concerned about only in regard to rings? If such a stone were to be used for earrings, where there is less chance of the stone hitting something, is an inclusion that hits the surface as much of a problem?
