Hello PSers! I'm struggling with adult acne as I've mentioned in another thread but I'm realizing that once I get rid of this problem, I want to start making my skin a priority and not take it for granted. My husband recently went to the dermatologist to make sure his darkened spots weren't cancerous. The dermatologist recommended him visit the affiliated esthetician. Instead of the initial suggestion of some sort of laser treatment, she did a chemical peel instead on his face. Wow, I couldn't believe it that 1 treatment showed so much benefit. Though it will take him a total of 3 to get rid of all the darkened areas. So it got me thinking and appreciate if you had any experiences to share:

Question 1 - Is a dermatologist affiliated esthetician any different from going to a spa and doing their treatments? Or rather is a chemical peel the same no matter what place you go to? He was charged $300 for the visit but I see other places charging closer to $100.

Question 2 - What other skin treatments would you recommend that is effective, longer lasting that isn't invasive like botox? I'm wondering if after I get the acne cleared up, is it good practice to do 1 chemical peel a year? I've never left a facial thinking "wow I look significantly different" but would like to do some prevention as I'm approaching my 40s.

Thanks in advance!

The effectiveness of any treatment depends on the training and skill of the person performing it. I've gone to spas for facials, a few laser treatments, and micro needling in the past with mixed results. My impression is that the level of training at spas differs with each facility.

When I decided to get laser treatment for rosacea, I decided to use the esthetician at my dermatologist's office. Her continuing training and education is something that the dermatology clinic requires and she is supervised by the dermatologists. I felt safer knowing that there was supervision by doctors. I also like that all of my dermatology needs are located in one facility.

If you have scarring from the acne that requires serious laser treatment, I definitely recommend using the dermatologist's esthetician.

My recommendation is that you consult with the dermatologist affiliation esthetician and then choose a typical spa offering the same service and see which one you feel better about. Don't let price alone be the determining factor. One of the things I didn't like about spas is that they are always trying to upsell their products and services and I find that annoying.

P.S. As far as recommending treatments, it's impossible to say what you need and what would work without an expert's evaluation of your skin, your diet, and inherited traits affecting your skin which is why consulting a professional is so important.

Answer everything: get outside and get that vitamin D.

I have terrible exzema have has it since childhood and the ONLY thing that helps it is sunlight and salt water.

@Matata - Appreciate your thorough response. Looks like you've been through this cycle before and hope your rosacea has improved. Thanks for the assurance to not look at price and focus on the best process. I think with the holiday shopping, I've been focusing on the "deals" part of this research and forgetting that the results is what I'm striving for.

@monarch64 - Hope your eczema has improved overtime and glad you found your method! I'm actually in the sun more often than most people with the running and cycling training. I do wear sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, but I'm guessing that there has been some damage done.

I have acne - prone skin and get Genesis and IPL. A lady close to me runs a home business so I get a good deal. I get a once monthly treatment alternating those 2. It helps with aging (I'm 58) and somewhat with breakouts. I had a peel years ago and it was very helpful although not in my budget currently.
