Hi guys,

I purchased a platinum engagement ring for my fiance. It was initially sized as a 5 1/2. It was a bit loose so we went back to have it resized. At the jeweler she tried on a blank shank that was a size 5, this was too tight, but the 5 1/2 is a bit too big. The jeweler recommended that he can insert a small piece of platinum wire (he said they can''t resize by quarter increment but only by half increments, is this true) on the bottom of the shank (it looks like a little hill). That seemed to do the trick (in hindsight the only reason it fit was because it was extremely hot in the room and her finger swelled).

Unfortunately the ring is still a bit loose. We are concerned for a few reasons. 1) There are diamonds all around the shank, 2) Is it worth having the jeweler cut it and resize it down only a quarter of a size.

In the meantime we have a small piece of band aid around the little piece of wire that the jeweler put on. It fits great!

What would you do?

So this is a full eternity band? That may be where the sizing issues are coming in...do you have pictures? If it was just a plain shank you could certainly have it done 1/4 of a size, but with an eternity it depends. Sounds like what he put in was a horseshoe sizer maybe? That's a pretty normal option especially if you have an eternity that is hard to size.

The other thing to consider is that her finger will likely swell in the summer if you are indeed from NY. So you want to take that into consideration before you resize...unfortunately you need to find a happy medium so it isn't too loose in winter nor too tight in summer. So if she hasn't worn it for a summer yet, she might want to wait until she sees how much her fingers swell then.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don''t have a picture.

The diamonds do not go all the way around, I would say they go around about 3/4''s of the way.

She is really just afraid to loose it I guess. You are right we live in NY so we have to contend with the varying seasons. I''m just not sure if we are going to be able to find a happy medium due to temperature fluctuations.

Too bad she can''t wear it on her right hand because it fits perfectly !

A wedding band can help with the temperature fluctuations...but yes, it is hard to find the perfect size for all seasons. Mine ends up being a bit loose in the winter and a bit tight in summer...not perfect, but it works.

I don''t see why the jeweler can''t size it 1/4 of a size though...I might consider another jeweler, it shouldn''t be a big deal if it isn''t an eternity band.

When she wears a wedding band with it, it might fit perfectly. And it might fit perfectly in the summer, or even be a little tight. I live in New York too, and I have some rings I can only wear in the winter and others I can only wear in the summer. My wedding band is tight in the summer and loose in the winter. I wear my diamond ring (my grandmother''s engagement ring) on different fingers depending on the season. In the winter I wear it on my right ring finger, and in the summer I wear it on my left.

I think you''d better take a trip to someplace hot and sunny this weekend--maybe the Caribbean--to see whether the ring will fit in the summer.
