Hello Fellow PSers!

You have all been so helpful. After the hollow band incident, I have realized that I need to consult you all before I make any rash decisions. So here is one more VIQ: How hard/dangerous is it to size down a 8 3/4 platinum half eternity band to a size 6? I'm afraid of the diamonds popping out or the shape of the eternity band being real weird....

Likely there will be some out of roundness when it is done. It may be minor and invisible when the ring is being worn, but looking at it from the side when it is off your finger it will probably be ovalish. The next issue is how the diamonds are set. If they are in opposed bar settings they will get loose. If they are in non-shared four prong settings they may be totally unaffected. Shared froms is another story. Stones set in four shared prongs may become loose enough to create a problem It can be solved, but don't plan on such a job going easily or being absolutely perfect and invisible when it is done. You can take the ring down a size and then put a sleeve inside the ring to take up more finger size. This makes the ring a bit heavier and more durable while making the out of roundness and tightness issues less of a problem. It takes more metal and comes for a higher cost, but it is usually an alternative.

You already have the expert advice, but I will just add that I wouldn't consider a ring like that unless it my exact size or a half size off. I had my own diamond band resized just a half size one time and it loosened the stones. I'd recommend just being patient because size 6 is a very common size and you should be able to find one in your size.

Ditto.

You'd be better off scrapping the original setting, and having the stones set into a ring that's your size.

Okay! Thanks all! I suppose it was also a bad sign that the seller did not address my question at all about how the shape of the ring would be affected. I suspected that it would be a funny oval shape. I am going to let this one go and just get one that is perfectly my size. Thanks for all the advice!!!

Hi Oldminer,

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question! You mention that there are bar settings versus no-shared prong settings with the princess cut channel set bands. What are the advantages of one over the other? Are the diamonds in the bar setting more protected /less likely to chip/fall out? I was quite interested that the designer Mark Morrell does not typically make channel set rings without beading. He wrote something about protecting the diamonds, but then my friend told me that the round channel set diamonds sometimes fall out, and this got me very worried. What are the structural weaknesses of a princess cut channel band and the bar setting vs shared setting?

Thanks very much for sharing your expertise! :)
