Thanks for your help so far. Now i''m back to splitting hairs but i''m sure it''ll be worth it in the long run.

My girlfriend has a 2 3/4 ring size and i want to get her the best. the setting will be a diamond pave encircling the girdle of the center diamond...now i just need to pickout the diamond. That said, there''s a beautiful 1.21 ct ACA that i''m looking at but I''m also thinking the max i could go would be 1.51 and there''s a slew of those.

That said, is the "catch your eye across the room" difference between a good 1.51 and a ACA 1.21 significant? Would the 1.51 with a pave around be too big for a 2 3/4 ring size? any ideas?

Yes, to me the difference in size is significant between those two weights and face up sizes. If you did choose the 1.51 then IMO a pave halo would not be too much.

Depends on what you mean by good. If it is just a good cut, or do you mean stones that did not make the ACA grade but still in the AGS0, HCA <2? If the former, I would prefer to stick to the 1.2c ACA because of the better optics.

Whether or not that diamond size would seem to big to you is a matter of personal preference. I have fairly small fingers, not quite as small as your girlfriend but fairly small. Personally I don't think that the 1.51 would look too big at all. But it depends on her taste. Some ladies want smaller diamonds, some ladies like bigger diamonds.

It also depends what country you live in since people can have different feelings about diamonds and diamond size in different locales, not to mention different families and different social circles. The same ring that is huge in one circle or locale can be considered small in another.

It all depends on the context. Visually speaking I think a person could wear a pretty darn big stone (maybe even a cool antique one my fav:)if balanced with simple elegant clothing. But socially speaking not always appropriate depending on where you live and who you hang with.

So to me the 1.51 would not look too big on her finger-but that is just me.

And welcome to Pricescope and congrats on wanting to get her the best.

I think a well cut 1.21 on a size 2 3/4 finger would be perfect. But, I''m not a size gal per se, so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt.

My fingers are almost the same size as your girlfriend although I like to wear my rings a little bigger. I think 1.5 would be a great size but I wouldn''t go with a halo. In my opinion, it would overwhelm her hand and look a little overboard for daily wear. I have rings that are much larger in size with a halo but they are cocktail rings and worn only on special occasions.

And that is the crux of the matter - do you know if she would rather have the bigger stone - also are you sure she wants a halo anyway? You could get a 1.5ct and keep it as a solitaire if you are not sure as another option?

A 1.5 on her finger will look pretty huge. I wouldn''t consider a setting with pave encircling the stone. The 1.2 ct. stone would be better for that kind of setting, I think. But personally, I''d rather have a solitaire of either size. Just stick with ACA or ideal cut whatever you decide!

I have decided to go ahead with the 1.21 ct ACA stone....it just felt better and i really think i was splitting hairs. She did want a micropave around the diamond....those were the ones she liked the best.

I think it''ll look good....

It''s called a halo. I love halos as well but my boyfriend hates them. Actually, most men dislike halos for some reason - I am glad you are a fan!

For reference, here is a 1.21 ct. in a halo on a size 3. It''s July08Bride''s ring.

That really puts things in perspective. There is such a thing as too big!!

I have to say if you want to halo on a tiny finger size like that, I would be looking more in the 1 - 1.2ct size. IMHO 1.5ct with a halo is too big. Sometimes less is more

I bet she will love it!

Ditto!

Man, I wish I had teeny fingers like that. I''m currently looking at my size 5 3/4''s with disdain...

I think that the 1.21 will be best with the halo. Cannot wait to see it when it''s done!
