six prongs make the stone look smaller?

I was at a jewelry store today. I was waiting for some work to be done on my ring and started browsing wedding bands. Anyway, I was telling the salesman that I already had the engagement picked out. He asked me what it looked like and I told him it was a six prong , Tiffany style ring (the one from Whiteflash). He told me that the six prongs will make the stone look smaller. Since he was not trying to sell me an engagement ring, I assume that his advice is sincere and not an effort to get me to purchase a more expensive ring. So, in your expert opinion, PSers, does the six prong setting make the stone look smaller?

In my opinion, no. If anything it makes a stone look bigger because your eye is naturally drawn to the outer most edge of the shape.

To me, the prongs make the diamond appear larger and make it more round. I looked at a diamond in both 6 & 4 prong to see which I preferred. I love 6 prong

The reason that I like six prongs is because it makes the stone look rounder. I never thought that it had any effect on how big the stone looks. I was kind of surprised when the jeweler said that. He had nothing to gain by saying it.

I think it really goes both ways. Because many people swear 6 prongs make it look bigger, I have always thought 6 prongs make the diamond look smaller. Go with what you prefer.

I''ve wondered about this question, too. I had my diamond reset last June. I''d had a 6 prong head for 22 years, and went with a double prong/octet. It definitely gives it a more cushion-y look at first glance, and I think it looks a bit bigger, too. My thought about that was the 6 prongs evenly distributed sort of dwarfs the stone. Maybe it depend on the size of the stone?

2nd. Under one carat looks better with four prongs. Less metal, more attention to the diamond. FWIW, my center stone only has four prongs so it looks a bit less round, but with the size of the stone, the perspective is maintained.

i have seen 3,4, and 6 prong.
2 prongs are kind of like the tension rings.

i don''t suppose there is more than 6 prongs right??
are there any other unique and interesting prongs out there?
