I grew up loving diamonds and precious stones as my momma is an avid collector of jewelries. My cousin is going to propose to his girlfriend and since my mom has a vast amount of jewelries at her disposal, mommy doesn't feel the need to have him spend the moolah to get his fiancee a ring and instead save up for their future life together. Right now we're in a dillemma (I too am helping him to choose which ring to use as the token of proposal). Help!017_0.jpg

This particular ring has 1.60ctw. All of the diamonds are of the D-F color VVS2-VS2 clarity. The center part consist of 4 Marquise and a small Princess.

LOL. Title was wrong, supposed to be Cousin getting married! ANyway, here's a vintage Colombian Emerald ring my mom bought when she was vacationing around the South Americas. 4ct Emerald mounted on both yellow and white gold surrounded by SI2-SI1 diamonds. Quite a steal.084_0.jpg

Here's a few more to choose.

Pardon the flash I used, but the princesses are GIA Fancy Yellow, each princess cut diamonds weigh 0.81ct and 0.80ct.

This particular beauty is a 1.73ct GIA Fancy Intense Yellow surrounded by Pear shaped diamonds with colors ranging from G-H, all with VS2 clarity. Mom personally shopped and selected the stones herself.

This, I suspect, is a Fancy Light diamond (it has no certificate). Not so sure about the cut and all, but the center diamond is almost 3ct if I'm not mistaken. I'm not familiar with the 2 other diamonds.

I dont know how heavy this ring is, but this is a Madagascar Ruby with diamonds around it. Kate Middleton has sapphire engagement ring, so why don't we go with ruby?

Crikey, she's going to be one lucky girl!!!

All of these rings are very different, so it depends on her style & what you think she may wear? I absolutely love the large yellow cushion with half moon sides, but would that fit into her life & she would be comfortable wearing it?? I also love the yellow with pear surrounds. It reminds me of a happy sunflower. But if she's not very flashy, I would go with the 2 square cut yellows on the bypass ring. It looks much smaller, but its really unique & striking.

Send any left over my way, will you?!! :lickout:

And I am still in awe that your mum is being so generous with her beautiful rings!!

Personally I would prefer the large yellow cushions with colorless half moon sides..... Really depends on her style. Is she an understated simple girl or more bold and flashy with her accessories... Does she prefer white gold or yellow gold?

Another vote for the fancy yellow diamond cushion with the half moon sides. Very classic and e-ring type setting- but gorgeous!!!!

Well - if ever there was a personal choice - this is it! They are all so very different! I would choose the yellow diamond bipass ring, myself.

I agree we all will have our "favorites", but really its a matter of what she likes and her style. But here is my feeling

The first ring, the cluster, is a very take it or leave it type style, and wouldnt allow her to reset it or something down the line, sense it isnt one stone, so i probably would go for that one myself

Im too clumsy to have such a soft stone as an e ring, so the emerald would be out (though its beautiful!)

the yellow with the pears is SUPER flashy and "look at me!", is she that kind of person? Its lovely, but i know i might be self conscious wearing something soooo fancy every day! ::)

The bypass would be hard to have a wedding band with i would think.

So for me it gets narrowed down to the ruby or the 3 stone yellow.

I would probably pick the yellow because as much as i love other colored stones, nothing says "engagement" like a diamond. However, the ruby is really classic too, so i could really easily see that an e ring.

this is just what i though when i saw the rings at the end of the day it really what her style is, but regardless of what he picks, the FI to be is so lucky to be joining so a loving and giving family!! :halo:

Couldn't agree more with every point made in this post!!!

Thank you so very much for all the helps. Yes, my mom is quite the generous woman, but since my cousin's been living with us since we're mere teenagers, it'd be safe to assume that he is a son to her anyway.

I was thinking about giving him the emerald ring since it's vintage and we'd have the 'something old' covered anyway, until one of you pointed out that emeralds aren't for everyday wear. Also, We weren't even thinking about the lady's personal style. She is the sweetheart 'girl-next-door' kind of a lady, not very elegant, but very warm and welcoming. Like the sun. Lol. Here's one more. This is a solitaire P color (yes, way down the color chart) but VVS1 clarity. The stone weighs 1.65ct with exceptional cut/symmetry/polish, so it gives out a lot of brilliance and fire.

This is the ring my mother'd wear everyday before she gets her fancies last time because she felt that "yellow diamonds projects an image of friendliness whereas diamonds with less color gives off frigid aura." Now she evidently doesn't think like that no more, cuz what she has on her finger now is anything but yellow, and she's friendlier than ever.

I think you forgot the pic :))

Sorry! I indeed have forgotten to post the pic. Thank you. Here they are!

I'd go with the P solitaire, hands down.

Here's another emerald ring. The emerald comes from India, and this is my fat hairy finger. Very very elegant. img-20130511-wa002.jpg

This is an M color marquise diamond weighing 1.40ct on my fat finger. My cousin's fiancee has very short fingers (cuz she's of small stature). Don't you think marquise cut diamonds would do her short fingers justice?

And oh, my mom is LENDING the bride a pair of earrings to wear at her wedding day. I don't know which of these two behemoths to pick. One pair is a cluster diamond earrings and I absolutely have no idea the total carat weight of these beauties. The other one is 4.38ctw, both K colors, VVS2. The cluster earrings would go very well with the cluster ring that I had on my finger, no?

I would definitely pick the P solitaire or the yellow with white half moon sides. They are the most classic and neutral of the bunch.

Your mom has an incredible collection!

Thank you Rosebloom. I'm sure you too have some to-die-fors yourself. My mom has been collecting jewelry pieces since she was in her twenties. She sometimes purchase articles from auction houses, so some of her jewelries are really unique pieces. I myself am a lover of precious stones, and having a mom that's mad about these things really do help.

And oh, we have decided, thanks to all of your helps (you guys are WONDERFUL, this forum is AWESOME), we have decided to go with the yellow cushion cut with the two half moons. My cousin is proposing this weekend. *finger's crossed*

If it was me I would rather have my own ring. It's great mom is generous and I would take a RHR but I would still rather he picked one himself. Many of those rings are "old lady" for a young girl. If I had to take one it would be the P solitaire.

Oh my golly I love that marquise. But that's an acquired taste I think

I get you AprilBaby. Most of the rings I've posted are kind of 'Dated', and the only 'In' ring is the P solitaire. I would love for him to pick a bigger solitaire if he could, but my mom wouldn't let us have the option to select her other solitaires as they are way too big and too expensive to giveaway (The next in line after this solitaire 1.60 P, is a monstrous 4.13 carat RB K color stone my mom wears on everyday basis. And the rest is well above 5 carats). :$$):

this is the monster I see daily. She's punched someone in the face with this ring (#true).

I'm sure she'd be happy with his selection though, wouldn't she?

That's exactly why I said I would choose the P solitaire. It's classic enough that it feels more like and heirloom and less like a hand-me-down.

My grandmother gave each granddaughter a ring from her collection before she passed away. I was last and was given a ring that the others didn't get to choose from, an almost 1CT (I-J/I1-I2 MRB) diamond ring set in an 1980s monstrosity of gold. But my sister did get to choose and she said it was really hard because they were mostly "old lady" rings and Grandma was only showing them to her one at a time. She chose the least "old lady" one she could. I'm really glad neither of us was choosing a ring to act as an engagement ring.

It's very generous to give the young couple the engagement ring, but I would really steer your cousin toward something very classic, not something that follows a certain trend (yellow diamonds are trendy and that has made yellow sapphires trendy, which means people might assume it's a sapphire) or that looks like it belongs on a grandmother. And not the emerald because it is too fragile.

I don't think it's fair to expect someone to be happy with something just because it was given to them, especially if it originates from "I had six rings of my aunt's to choose from and decided this was the one". An e-ring is very personal; most of the men who I've seen post here looking for advice in choosing an e-ring are taking into account their partner's tastes and preferences.

I'd still go with the P, maybe even having the couple reset it to make it more hers. After that I'd go with the marquise. I wouldn't give any woman a colored stone e-ring without knowing that it was something she really wanted. For most women, they wear their e-ring everyday of their lives for many, many years.

I think its very sweet! With the caveat she is allowed without guilt to reset it if she likes. Maybe propose with all of them (sans the emeralds for durability reasons) and let her pick? Sounds fun)

I agree with Niel!

My vote is for the FLY with half moon sides! I'm a fan of classic looks for an ering.

I would go with the P diamond for sure

This is such an awesome idea! Imagine the fun she could have AND the feeling of being apart of the selection process :appl:

The marquise is calling my name, it's gorgeous!!! I think if she had shorter fingers it would help elongate them.
