While searching Pricescope for settings, I came across the Lockes "signature solitaire" that Sunkist and Matatora have. I contacted Lockes yesterday asking about prices for the ring and was told, to my dismay, that they had discontinued the setting.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across a similar setting to the Lockes anywhere? I know about the Vachte Royal Crown, the Tiffany replica solitaires which are similar in design concept to the Lockes, but are there any others out there that are closer to the Lockes? I don't even necessarily need/want the diamond chips in the side- its the design of the head itself (with the U-shaped prongs that really "hug" the diamond) that I'm really after.

I'll attempt to attach a photo of the Lockes setting for anyone who is not familiar with it.

Thanks for any leads you can give me!

you could always go custom and as mara said, ask for ''low, swoopy and scoopy'' .....er...something like that!

Wow, I actually have a Locke''s Setting as well and didn''t realize they have discontinued it. Did they mention how long ago this was implemented? That''s a pretty major decision considering it''s called their ''Signature Setting''. I''m guessing they lost the person who was making it and the new guy couldn''t make it as precisely (hence Sunkist and Demelza''s issues perhaps). hmm...

Well, like people have suggested alternatives, there are lots of gorgeous settings out there for you to choose from. When I was looking at different settings to narrow down for my fiance, a few others I also considered include: Mark Morrell''s solitaire setting, I love Lynn B''s eternity band setting by WF, a Ritani one that someone posted but can''t remember the style name. I also like a few others that people have recently posted so i''ll try to find those links for you.

I imagine if you also liked the Locke''s setting we may have similar taste so I''ll try to see which others I also like!

Oh my word... I think my mouth dropped open when I read that Lockes has discontinued their "Signature Setting". Those people are certifiable!!!!

ETA: Havernell, I do wish you the best of success in finding the setting of your dreams. Please keep us posted! And FWIW, I LOVED that Lockes setting.

I did love the Lockes and it is a shame they cannot find someone who can make it perfectly.
I asked this once before but never saw a reply - what happened with kd's 4 prong JA that was similar? was there a prob with it or did she just get bored with it quickly and want a 3 stone?

the stone was too big for four prongs.

Wow - you guys have good memories.

Yes, James Allen made a Lockes inspired ring for me, and my mistake was requesting that they make it 4 prongs, with the prongs as delicate as possible. Turns out that didn''t work out too well for my 3.5 carat round. The stone kept coming loose...presumably because the prongs were too delicate to support a large stone. So I reset it into my current Leon setting.

HOWEVER, I do have to say that the JA ring was absolutely stunning. It seemed to have more than a few admirers here on PS.

Maybe someone could dig up those old pics somewhere around here. I believe his jeweler could make that ring again, but I''d advise going with 6 prongs instead of 4.

Oh I''ve seen the pics!! Not only that I printed them out and took them to my jeweler and told her I loved it!! I did wonder about the stability of those dainty prongs and that huge stone... There are definitely elements in my rng from that of yours, but with my 8 prongs I think I should be safe :D

Hi!

You might want to email Mark Morrell because he is designing a crown for me that has nuances of the lockes setting in that there are little surprise stones on the base of the crown, but MWM''s is heaps better I reckon!

My project is almost 6 months in the making and I am hanging to get my new set. I will post pics when I do get it, but it won''t be for another month I think. I am not comfortable posting Mark''s pictures of the new crown without asking for permission, so it''s best if u email him direct.

Good luck finding your perfect setting!

Diamondseeker- thanks very much for sharing the price info and the photos, I really appreciate it! Hope you don''t have to wait too much longer for your ring!

Speaking of cost (I hope it''s not considered a gauche topic here- if it is, please someone clue me in!), KristyDarling, do you recall how much James Allen charged for your custom setting? I was hesitant to think about trying to get the Lockes replicated, but JA did a pretty good job for you (looks wise), so perhaps I should consider it. My stone is less than half the size of your stone plus I''d go with six prong, so hopefully I wouldn''t have the same problems with the setting as you had.

Thanks for all of the ideas you ladies are generating! This is fun!

Many people share prices and some do not. But there is nothing wrong with asking!

I''ll tell you who could probably make the Lockes setting for you...Maytal Hoftman. She told me she could make anything I wanted. Do a search, she makes magnificent rings.

JadeLeaves- Waiting all those months for your ring must be torturous, but I'm sure it will be well worth it in the end! I would be interested to see what Mark Morrell has cooking for you. If I email him, is there something I can say to indicate that it is your ring design I'd like to take a peek at (i.e. I'm assuming he doesn't know your PS screen name, so is there a model name or number he's assigned to your setting or something else like that that I could mention)?

DS- I have seen Maytal Hoftman's work on PS, but it seemed like she did more halo/pave settings. But, if she told you she would be willing to make something more simple, I suppose shooting her an email about making a Lockes-esque setting wouldn't hurt (especially if she is a bit less expensive than many other designers, as you mentioned on another thread). My boyfriend and I are both grad students and he already stretched his budget for the center stone, so I really want to keep the setting cost reasonable (hense all of the questions about prices).

In general, is going the custom setting route (for a plain solitaire- i.e. no pave, etc) more expensive, less expensive or roughly equal to just purchasing a ready-made designer setting? I realize the best answer to that is probably "it depends" but I'm just curious what PSers have personally experienced.

It totally depends on who is doing the custom work. Sometimes it is close to the same as a designer setting or it can be more. Maytal charges way less that the Beaudry rings she is capable of making. She shows the pave rings because she makes what people ask for, and that is popular now. But she has worked for Tiffany, too, and can make anything. All you have to do is send her a picture, tell her the metal and ring size and size of stone, and she''ll give you a quote. I have seen some custom work on here that was terribly overpriced..and ugly, too. So it is a good idea to go with someone who has samples of high quality work for sure.

I''m not KD but the reason she changed her setting to her current Leon is because he stone kept coming loose in the JA setting. I think for some reason folks are having a hard time with it, maybe a design flaw, who knows, but I probably would have JA try to do it again. stick with Maytal, mark morrell, Leon or someone who''s only focus is setting and design.

~~The DeBeers signature setting is a little similar...Here is a pic...

I dunno if there is a design flaw, there might be.... but I think lockes problem was a certain sloppiness in execution of late and kd nailed her issue with 3.5 in 4 dainties LOL same design for a 3.5 in 6 sturdies would have likely kept it firm :)

I''d definitely go for a copy design of this ring now that you can''t get the original....

Yeah, i some how missed KD''s post explaining the 4 prong thing...if you like the lockes i''m sure you can find a skilled benchperson to make it..

Hi!

You can tell Mark that Jade mentioned he has designed a new crown with surprise diamonds and that you''re interested in viewing a picture of it.

Cheers!

bling*diva- Thanks for the DeBeer''s setting photo. I had looked at their settings online, but the DB website only seems to show top views- not side views. Where did you find this photo? I can''t stand websites that don''t show a side view of the settings!! I am finding that I am VERY particular about the head of my setting (who knew?), so side pictures are a must!

Jade- great! I''ll drop Mark and email soon. Thanks for being willing to share your design pictures with me! I really appreciate it.

Any other suggestions? All of these ideas have been really helpful so far, so many thanks again to everyone who has posted.

I love the Lockes too! Please post if you find anything more that is similar or if you find someone to replicate it!

I am thinking of contacting Maytal too.
But I still haven't found a stone yet!

Does anyone have a current e-mail address for Maytal? I am exploring options for a custom job and would like to get a quote from her.

Thanks!
Lynn

I''ve contacted Maytal before and she will charge $2100 for the Lockes setting.

Ditto on the email request for Maytal. I googled her and couldn''t find anything.

Thanks!

I have e-mailed Maytal twice with no response whatsoever!

Call her, if you have her phone number that is. Good luck!!!

Lynn, was it during the holidays by chance? Perhaps she is away?
