Hello,

I am wondering what to look for in a high quality setting? What are some of the marks?

I went to the jewelry district over the weekend and looked at / tried on TONS of settings. I could tell the really crappy ones, and the really really nice, designer ones from each other. But then there were a lot that seemed fine to me, but without a designer name I wanted to be more reassured of quality.

I know I can look at side stones under an idealscope to judge those if I want to. And I know to look for rough / unfinished edges on the back or other places that don''t show, and that this is a sign of shoddy workmanship.

Are there any other red flags, or positive signs of good workmanship that I can keep my eyes open for? Or is it just a general impression of heft/solidity and smooth edges?

Thanks!

I saw your post and I thought about my ring. I'm not a jeweler so how to describe it was difficult for me. I have a LE ring from White Flash and it is seamless. There are no joints of any kind. It simply flows. From the shank to the bezel. No bumps. No look of metal having been worked. No soldering what so ever. It's as if they dug into the ground and pulled out this perfectly formed piece of platinum. The turning on the bezel is flawless. I'm glad Fey mentioned balance. Weight without being heavy and my ring does not spin.

WF also made my earrings and the prong work is,......... well it's like they aren't even there. You can't see them at normal viewing distance and you have to work to feel them. It's like the prongs blend into the stone and become a part of the diamond. They don't stick up and catch on things like other prongs I've had.
