Should you buy bigger to allow for shrinkage?

This is a serious question.

I may have the opportunity to buy bigger stones than I originally thought I could afford and bigger than I thought I wanted. The stones would be optimal cut. Since this will likely be the only upgrade I ever get, should I buy bigger than I had planned to hopefully, stop the shrinkage effect or is that just a bad idea?

Would you do it?

ETA: No matter what size I go with the diamonds will be in the colorless range and eye clean.

It depends.
I may bump up the clarity and or color instead.

It would depend what is available.

Yes and No. It depends on the size. There are limits that I wouldnt wear because I would think its too big and too much and would be uncomfortable. So it really depends on the ring, its purpose, the setting you are putting it in and how much bigger you are talking about. If you say .1, .2 bigger then sure. If youre saying a .5 difference it may be the "breaking" point. Thats just personal preference. But usually I think everyone will agree if you are saying the quality of the diamond is the same and you arent sacrificing those components of the diamond then sure. Then there is also some things to think about in terms of color. If you are going for one with color the bigger it is the more yellow you may see. So theres things like that to consider as well.

Jillian if the larger stone is well cut and you like it then it is worth considering, DSS is real

and it might be nice to have a bit of extra size....

Ditto.

Jillian,

I wouldn''t sacrifice quality for size.

if I had the opportunity to get a bigger stone and still have a quality stone..I would JUMP at it.

As long as cut is not compromised, I`d do it.

Unfortunately, DSS is very real no matter how immune we think we are...

I would go for the bigger size as long as the quality was there! My stone definitly seemed to shrink after I got use to
wearing it.

I guess I''ll put the dissenting view in here! I have a smaller stone in a bezel setting. After reading up at Pricescope I had it made a few years ago. Because the size and the style really suites me and my lifestyle I have no desire to upgrade and no DSS. To me it seems silly to increase the size just because you might get DSS. I would just find a stone you absolutely love and put it in a setting that reflects "you" but classic enough you can wear it for many years. The caveat is that you know yourself best. If the main reason for the upgrade is size and you think you might want bigger down the road, put that in consideration as well, without sacrificing the quality of the stone you select (because I know that would bug me more!).

Go for it. You won''t regret it. This advice is coming from someone who went from a .53 to a 1.0 within a month (the company I bought from has a very good trade-in policy!). IMHO, DSS does not go away -- best to just deal with it now, instead of getting the smaller carat size and having to pay for a new setting when you do trade up.

I just have to say that sarap333---you are too funny!!!

I agree with others, if you have the means to get the bigger stone at this time (of same quality of course) do it NOW!

Well, thanks, beechezz, I'll take that as a compliment!

To the OP, DSS is a very contagious disease, found only among PS'ers. If you're posting a thread like this, you're already infected. It's useless to try and fight it off.

The only cure is to take a looooong break from PS, which I intend to do....after I finish my reset!

ditto... just go for bigger so long as you are not compromising cut.

Totally.

What does "optimal" cut mean?

If shrinkage is going to set in, it may happen no matter what size you get now. I''d just get what you''re happy with now and worry about the future later. And make sure "optimal" cut actually means something if that''s a term the seller is using. If you just meant that they''d be AGS0s or something like that, then no worries.

There''s a very effective treatment for DSS:

Get a ring with a significantly smaller center stone than the diamond in question (the one that''s shrinking). Another diamond or similar-looking colorless stone is best, but a colored stone works too. Put your diamond ring away in the safe deposit box for at least two days, preferably a week, and wear the smaller stone instead.

When you put your larger diamond back on, it will look huge.

Repeat as necessary.

Sara~I mean this in the best way possible, but you have had a rapid onset of DSS since joining PS

To be honest, so did I!! I started with a .80 and went to a 1.23 and then to my current 1.62. When that started shrinking before my eyes, I set it in a halo. I think I am good for the duration

Jillian~as long as you are not sacrificing the cut quality, I say go for it!!

I think so as well, but what kind of jump are you looking at?
Some sizes the carat weight difference is more significant than others... but I still agree- if you can afford to go bigger, do it now or regret it later

Here''s what I experienced with my rings. The 1.22ct shrunk like right away. The 3.55ct still looks huge a year and a half or so later. I don''t think I''ll want anything bigger than that! So, I''d say it depends on the size of stone. If it''s a larger size, 2.5-3.5ct depending on your finger size, you might find it "stays" the perfect size.

I''d always buy bigger if I could afford it. My requirements for a diamond are pretty simple: white, eye clean and sparkly! If it meets those requirements and you can go bigger, do so ;0) Nip that DSS in the bud.

Oh, Risingsun you are SO right! I caught "sudden onset DSS"
6.gif
and the only cure was a trade-up! Lucky me, I put cut first, then size, then clarity, then color, so I was able to upgrade with very little pain.

Paying for two settings is what hurts though

I am going straight to the halo stage so that when my 1.0 comes back from Wink it will seem larger -- because I haven't seen it in awhile, as Glitterata suggested, and because of the halo -- nip that DSS in the bu**!!

To the OP, this is a bit tongue-in-cheek -- but just a bit! -- so my advice is the same as the others' on this thread -- if you can upgrade without sacrificing good cut, do it now.

I have DSS and secretly wish my DH had picked a bigger stone (especially because I know he could easily afford it!) so I say yes.

What size difference are you talking about?

Personally, I''d probably go with the size I''d want to keep forever. If there was money left over (say I went with the smaller size), I''d get a small diamond band to jazz the ring up when I felt in the mood.
