I have nice 2.05 carat studs. They are appraised as I-J color S1 clarity.....I have 3,500 to spend is it worth it to upgrade just for color or clarity or should I stay with these specs and go to 2.25......

Help...

If it were me, because *I* can't see my ears, I would not be focused as much on colour and clarity for earrings. I would be more concerned about an increase in the size, so --- cut would be my first priority, then carat weight, would dictate my earring upgrades.

In a perfect world, (that's the world where I am independently wealthy and can just buy whatever I want...) I'd have 1ct / ear, because that's the size that I'm comfortable with and I often have hair hiding my ears anyway.

Totally agree. Upgrade only for cut (if not already ideal cut) and size (only significant size increase). Then again, 2ctw+ is plenty big, especially for your perfectly small ears.

I'll "third" what they've said ... cut, carat, color, clarity will work well for your upgrade priorities. Especially when it comes to studs because they'll be noticed everytime someone looks at your face.

That said however, are your studs certified by GIA, AGS, EGL, etc? The reason I ask is because I'm a little confused by the color rating you've quoted as "I-J". As the experts have explained to me, a single diamond will have one color grade (so, in your case, either I or J). So if I-J means that one stud is "I" and the other is "J", I'd suggest that when you upgrade, you get them both the same color with a GIA (or other lab) certification.

I'll fourth the sentiment!

I suppose I shall "fifth" it then :) Not worth the money for that upgrade in my opinion.

So basically stay exactly where I am as they are 1 carat each :D

Thanks I've been doubting the size and cut But seeing the picture here they aren't too bad..... :appl:

Do they have GIA certs? Because my studs before PS did not and they did not turn out to be what I was told when I bought them. I sold them and have only had ideal cut studs ever since. So I did not really upgrade size, but I definitely upgraded cut and clarity. I think the color was accurate at H color.

They really do look perfect on your ears - the right proportion, IMO, and they do look bright, white and sparkly!!! Go with what you feel comfortable with, though.

here they are in the box

Do they have GIA reports? Are you able to upgrade to stones with GIA Excellent grading?

Thanks so much..I've had them one year and had several jewelers look at them. I agree with the one comment that when they are not certified it is most likely not what they say they are. so I kind of want them certified but on the other hand don't want to know that they are less then I've been told. Truly price is an issue so I should just leave it alone and upgrade to next size when I have more money. Thanks all

its all about money.......GIA stones are much more expensive. I have 3,500 to spend not sure I want to spend on GIA stones would end up with smaller stones I like the 2.05 size that I have now

If you like your earrings now, then don't worry about upgrading. That's a lot of money to spend just for that type of validation. My engagement ring is not GIA certified. If I could go back to the beginning 5 years ago, I would shop for one that was, but I love my stone and have had it appraised privately and am happy with the results. If I upgrade down the road for something significantly larger, I'll look for a GIA stone, but in the meantime I'm at peace knowing that I quite love my stone no matter what it is *technically*. $3,500 is a large chunk of change that can go toward a significant upgrade later on, or, if you so choose, a totally different project, but to get the same size just a higher color and clarity in earrings that aren't looked at very closely anyway wouldn't be the best use of those funds in my opinion.

GIA grading is not more expensive, it is more accurate. We are far more likely to overpay for stones that are ungraded, and that is why jewelers sell ungraded stones. They can exaggerate a little, which means we are usually paying for something we aren't getting. It sounds like you are happy with the current studs and that is totally fine. I would just never upgrade without the GIA or AGS grading so I know I am getting what I am paying for. My original 1.5 ctw H SI1 pair (ungraded) cost less than half of what my next 1.5 ctw H VS2 AGS Ideal cut pair cost. But that was because the first pair were not ideal cut (but still good), possibly not H color, and absolutely not SI clarity. In other words, I overpaid for poor quality stones even though they looked fine on the ears.

Again, your studs are a great size and if you are happy with them, there is no reason to upgrade at all unless you want to go up in quality with GIA graded stones.

I'm in agreement with Sonnyjane - that's $3500 that could be spent elsewhere if you are happy with what you have. Maybe the GIA cert is not what is needed to enjoy your earrings. If you are happy with them as is and love the look and size... then just enjoy them for what they are! Put the $3500 into a new bling project... or whatever works for you.

I would keep them since you are happy with them. I would go for cut and size on earrings.

I agree, if you are happy with the existing stones, don't upgrade them. Stay with them if they are not bothering you.
Keep the money for your next purchase :twirl:
