Should I take the risk?

Just bought a loose princess cut diamond online.. took it to a local jeweler who is GIA certified to have it mounted and he said there is a chip in a corner (not aware of), along with a feather in the opposite corner (aware of). They took a picture of it and sent it to me. He said it's about a 50/50 risk of it breaking on the corner, and would have to have it recut I guess. I have the option of just returning it but I got a really good price on it ($1530). Tell me your thoughts.

These are the specs:

Shape: Princess
Carat weight: 0.69
Cut: Very Good
Color: E
Clarity: SI1
Certificate: GIA
Depth: 73.8%
Table: 75.0%
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Faint
Measurements: 4.77*4.76*3.51
Ratio: 1.00

Return it.

Really? I just haven't found anything comparable to that prize and size.. Bah :/

I'd rather have an H-I colored stone than an E with a chip on a princess. Even if it doesn't set during setting (which it is likely to do) it could chip while she's wearing it. And while that's a fact with any diamond-- it's much more likely with one with a chip already. Do you want to deal with the hearbreak of herpotentially having the stone for a week and shattering it? Even with insurance, you only replace the diamond. Not the sentiment of having the stone your man proposed with.

This is not being frugal. It's being cheap. Frugal means getting a good deal. Cheap means sacrificing obvious quality for price. False economy is not good economy.

Thanks for the tips and link! Yeah I agree with you about getting a good deal. I bought it with the knowledge of it just having a feather, not a chip, as it wasn't on the GIA report. I just don't want to have to wait weeks for me to get a replacement, but I also don't want to have to have it repaired and pay more.. I'm thinking I will send it back.

Is there a reason you are looking up the VVS stones? I always thought SI1 was good enough, or is that why I have a chip? hah

Thanks again

No, I prefer lower clarity stones too but those weren't coming up on James Allen in the price range. I just wanted to throw a few stones at you so that you could see that you did not get a deal and that you should send it back. There are plenty more fish in the sea...and you can get the same diameter for the same price in a better clarity. Or get a larger stone in the same clarity. If you don't want to wait, get the stones I mentioned checked out - it'll take a couple of days and they'll then overnight the stone to you. If you chose to put it in a setting, you should still have an entire ring in a week or so.

I'm not sure why, but I've seen A LOT of reports lately with chips listed on the plot. I actually just got off the phone with WF about a potential stone and they mentioned that there was a small chip of the culet. I would definitely return a princess cut with a chip on the corner. Corners are fragile to begin with and these cuts are so unique that you can't find another at a comparable price without the chip. Had you been looking at a RB and the evaluation came back that it was a durability risk, that it could be pronged, or whatever, I may consider it. I'm also curious as to why it wasn't listed on your plot, IMO that's never a good thing.

return it. Once mounted, a simple bump could be enough to shatter/crack/split along a cleavage line. don't take that risk - send it back.

Earlier today I had myself convinced to just do it but now, im definitely returning it and going to sacrifice some size for quality. Especially with all of the liability on me, it's a no brainer now.

Thanks for all of your input.. really appreciated!

Glad that PS was able to help you in your decision. It was just not worth the risk and why knowingly buy a chipped stone? You'll find the perfect stone... just post what you need and PS will be here to help :))

Thanks, will do! Yeah... it sucks though because the GIA report only shows feather.. So I think I will try and stay away from feathers, I guess since there is no way for me to know if it will be near the corner or not, right?

I'm not familiar with what an idealscope/ASET is.. do you mind filling me in?

Did a little research.. makes sense.. but should this be done with any diamond that I buy, or just with a website like b2c?

They are pictures that the jeweler/gemologist takes showing you how the diamond reflects like. The idealscope shows overall light reflection/leakage (all red with white/black spots - you want shades of red, black/white bad=leakage) and the ASET shows you specifically what kind of light and how it's reflects (red, green and blue).
Example: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9227/
(this one just has an ASET)

Red is full intense light that's reflects back to you (good!), green is less intense reflection of light (ok) and blue is the darker reflections that provide contrast (see the darker parts in my avatar?) - princesses have less blue because they are not meant to have such a distinct pattern. Black is bad, it's light leakage. http://www.goodoldgold.com/classic/princess.htm
I'm not that familiar with princesses, so someone else can weigh in on what to look for specifically - or just post the ASETs from JA and people can advise you.

In this price range, you need to make trade offs so you wouldn't be looking for an ideal cut if you are trying to maximize the diameter, but you are looking for something with minimal leakage.

This should be done with ANY diamond you buy. It's proof of it's light performance.

 wow your a man in a hurry!! I hope that this one works out for you as well. I'm curious though, since the chip wasn't plotted or mentioned to you, and you had another jeweler setting the stone, is there or will there be an issue returning it? Will they come back and claim that the damage was done by the jeweler setting the stone?

They did say they will need to inspect it.. but the jeweler I went to doesn't even set it in-house, but he checked it out before sending it off and found the chip. He's also GIA certified and told me it should have been noted on the report... Basically I just took it there and the next day he let me know of the issues before proceeding. I sure hope there aren't any problems returning it.

Yay!! Just got it back with the new diamond. Crappy iPhone pic.
