Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I am seeking some advice from anyone and everyone on this informative board.

I bought a stone for an ering, but I''m wondering if I should return it for a different one. I''m going to try and get this stone independently appraised, just to see if it is a good stone for the size.

Stone 1 Specs:
1.23, F color, VS1, Excellent Cut, EX Polish, VG Sym
Table: 56%
Depth: 60%
Crown: 34.0
Pavilion: 40.6

One of the reasons I got this was because it has an HCA score of 0.5. On the other hand, the stone I''ve been looking to exchange it for is a:

Stone 2 Specs:
1.31, G color, VS1, AGS000
Table: 53%
Depth: 62%
Crown: 34.8
Pavilion: 40.8

Stone 2 scores a 1.6 HCA. However, while stone 1 has 0.5 score, it actually falls outside the ideal range for AGS on the HCA diagram, and just barely makes it inside the range for GIA. Stone 2, on the other hand, sits right about in the middle of both GIA and AGS ideal standards on the HCA diagram. Also, stone 2 has "AGSL #### H&A" inscribed on the girdle, but I''m not sure if that makes a difference.

Anyway, I know it''s difficult to offer feedback without seeing the 2 stones (I haven''t even seen Stone 2), but any advice/recommendations/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Welcome!

Firstly do you like this diamond you have? With HCA scores, a lower score doesn''t mean one diamond is better than another, it is basically an elimination tool which eliminates most known poor performers. Once you hit a score of 2 and under, this means a diamond is worth further consideration and this you do with Idealscope images etc, it isn''t a selection tool in itself or should really be used as such. Is it where this diamond has landed on the graph that is concerning you? Also I take it this diamond has a GIA report? I am wondering if it is a case that this diamond isn''t '' mind clean'' for you, if you could give us some more thoughts then we should be able to help you! Do you have links or Idealscope images of these diamonds so we could take a look? The link for the original diamond might still be up if you have only just bought it and it is an online diamond.

Those numbers aren't that bad. Chances are it's a pretty stone. If you could get the actual numbers on it, it would be nice. Assuming it's a GIA, GIA rounds C&P numbers, so we don't know what they truly are. If you change the crown to just 34.1, and the pavillion to 40.7, you're almost in AGS land.

I'd see what the appraiser says first.

Urrgh - I forgot to post that it could well be a pretty diamond, also with the rounding you could actually be in AGS land!

I still think it's worth a looksie.

Thanks for the quick replies. I don''t have access to Idealscope images or anything else for that matter (just the GIA report). I really do like the current stone, I guess I was mainly wondering if the small upgrade in carat size would result in a noticeably larger diamond, without compromising the other noticeable qualities of the current diamond. But it seems like this is largely about subjective taste when I start to pick hairs like this.

Also do you have the diameter measurements of each diamond, that way we can see how the face up size is to compare the two, there might not be a lot of difference as the second diamond is deeper, but post those measurements and we can take a look.

That I have:

Stone 1: 6.96 x 6.98 x 4.18mm

Stone 2: 7.06 x 7.07 x 4.37mm

Thanks! There isn''t much in it for face up size, those are 2 very tightly rounded diamonds though!

Honestly, you would not be able to tell the difference is size. Once you get past the 1 ct. mark, differences like this, especially when set, are negligible.

Thanks again for the replies! I haven''t looked at enough diamonds to know this kind of info for myself, so I really appreciate your opinions.

You''re welcome! Please let us know how it goes with the appraiser.
