Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if I should get an appraisal on the diamond before I send it to be set?
Thank you for your help!

Re: Should I get appraisal before sending the diamond to be

Maybe.

There are 5 primary reasons people get new things appraised.

1) Their insurance company requires it. What they’re looking for here is documentation on the completed item that they’ll be insuring. If this is your only objective, get it appraised when the piece is done.

2) To confirm or refute details that the dealer has told you and for which you want a second opinion before making a final decision. Usually, setting the stone drops your ability to return it to the seller. Setting also limits what the appraiser can do in terms of direct measurements. If this is your objective, get it appraised loose AND after it’s set.

3) Quality control. This is to make sure it’s the correct stone, that it’s undamaged, that it’s set correctly, etc. As with the above, this is best done on the completed item.

4) The setter requires it. Often setters want the stone inspected and insured before they will agree to start work with it. Some of this is a matter of documenting any preexisting damage and some has to do with liability issues if damage occurs during the setting process but if this is the case, obviously you need to have it done before you give it to the setter.

5) To decide if they got a ‘good deal’. This is usually related to #2 above and value claims made by the dealer. They want to use the appraisal as part of the shopping process. As with the above, setting usually eliminates your ability to return the stone so if you’re going to be making a decision based on the results, have it done before you have it set.
