Should i get an appraisal before or after buying a diamond?

Hi all
I would like to get some advice.
From reading the past threads, some people get their diamonds (with permission from the company) appraised before buying.
I was thinking it should be alright to buy first, get it appraised and decide if I should keep the diamond or return (within the return policy period).
Is this a bad move to make ? Could you let me know what you would do please?

Yes you can certainly purchase the diamond and have it appraised during the return period, then if on the rare chance it doesn't check out you can return it.

What some do is have the loose diamond appraised then have it set, once the ring is complete the appraiser gives the ring a final inspection and then gives a suitable figure for insurance on the finished ring. Some don't bother with an appraisal, it depends on your comfort level.
