Hello Everyone!

I'm new to this forum, having started my engagement ring search only recently. Based on some recommendations, I started out fairly uneducated at Bluenile, visited some local jewelers, then discovered PS. It's been a terrific resource!

I started out at Bluenile, but was a little uncomfortable spending that much money, sight-unseen, from what I equate to a big box store. I also didn't like their choices in settings very much.

Next, I went to a local jeweler that carried a fair selection of stones, all graded by GIA as EX/EX/EX for cut, symmetry, and polish. The sales lady took great care to educate me about the differences between stones. She was great and I felt comfortable buying from them because of the relationship we established. However, she didn't offer any detailed analysis on any of the stones beyond what was in the grading report. She acknowledged that cut is very important, but said that all their stones are "ideal". Their prices were competitive with BN, if not slightly more, but I was also unimpressed with their options for settings.

This past weekend, I went to Tiffany & Co, primarily because I know my GF has an affinity for their classing 6 prong solitaire setting. I've never seen an unattractive ring from Tiffany, but I've seen many from elsewhere. After comparing several different diamonds in the store, I settled on the following:

1.36 H VS2
Cut/Symmetry/Polish all Excellent
Medium Blue Fluorescence
Table: 56%
Depth: 61%
Crown: 34.3 degrees
Pavillion: 40.8 degrees
Medium Girdle, Faceted
HCA Score: 1.1 EX/EX/EX/VG

The stone was beautiful in person -- my reservation is that since I've looked at relatively few diamonds, I simply don't know any better!

For comparison purposes, I found a 1.42ct G VS2 Round H&A (http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3962/) at GOG for significantly less than the ring at Tiffany. After including the replica setting from Excel, it's still going to be ~ 25% cheaper than at Tiffany, not accounting for the larger carat weight and better color. Is it possible to assign a dollar value to the Tiffany setting? It looks far superior to any replica settings I've seen in person. I do like the idea of seeing what I'm purchasing, and taking it home at the point of sale.

My questions:

1) Should I be concerned about the medium blue fluorescence?
2) My GF has a small ring size (4.25), should I be concerned about having Tiffany resize it down from their standard 6?
3) Is the GOG diamond going to be of significantly better make than the Tiffany, based on the information I provided?
4) Should I bother taking it to an independent appraiser?

As much as my girlfriend won't outright admit it, I know she'll be some degree happier with a ring from Tiffany. I also know that she doesn't want to go too much bigger than 1.4ct or 1.5ct. The price is within my budget, though I don't mind spending less money!

I guess I'm trying to rationalize spending the extra money for the Tiffany ring... I appreciate any responses!

Thanks!

Hello :)

I''m not going to comment too much on the specs... but just wanted to say that you don''t need to justify spending the extra money - if it''s within your budget I would go for the Tiffany - especially if she really loves that ring and you have seen it in person and love it.

Obviously, you can get a much bigger (and sometimes better) stone from online vendors for significantly less... but if she isn''t after a massive rock then I''d spend your budget on the Tiffany... just my opinion.

I''m getting a Tiffany replica... only because the real thing is WAY out of our budget - if we could afford it - I''d def. have no qualms about spending extra for Tiffany.

Having said all that - I''m sure she''ll be happy with either - they will both be gorgeous rings.

I have nothing interesting to say about the stats except that she''s a lucky girl.

And that I think that blue florescence is awesome. I mean, it doesn''t get much cooler than a rock that sparkles in the light and then glows blue under black light. At least for me....

I''d prefer something from GOG. Their stones are beautiful and I don''t think a name is worth the extra money, especially if you are looking at rounds. But some folks like the name. You have to decide what''s more important to her, the name or the stone.

I think the numbers on the Tiffany diamond look pretty darn good. (I have a 34.3/40.8 with similar T/D that is amazing!). And MB fluor with an H is a great bonus! If you can afford it without it being a strain, I''d definitely go for the Tiffany. (If you hadn''t mentioned that she loves the Tiffany ring, I might be split between that and GOG.) Lucky girl!

I would go the GOG stone in the replica setting and use the extra money one a nice pair of diamond studs :D:D:D::D

If you think that she''d prefer the ring from Tiffanys and you can afford it, I''d go with that. If you don''t think that she minds if it''s Tiffanys or not, then go with GOG. Either way, she''s going to have a beautiful ring.

Ditto, I think if she doesn''t mind then the stone from GOG would be gorgeous. I think Fluorescence is all personal preference; did she like the look to it? You will want to take it to an appraiser if you want to verify the cert or for insurance purposes.

Well, then there''s your answer!

A bit redundant here, but get the Tiffany. It is true, I found out, that they don''t use the GIA anymore but they do internally grade their diamonds and as you saw yourself, their standards are very strict. The ring you have described sounds incredible. One thing I can add new to the discussion is more objective and not at all romantic. So dispel of notions of sentimentality, etc. before you read the following: If, 100 years from now you and your wife have moved on to the great beyond and your heirs want to sell the ring, they will get SIGNIFICANTLY more for a ring that is a Tiffany original, and stamped "Tiffany & Co." than if they tried to sell a 100 year old non-designer ring. Designer jewelry holds value long term.

Only you can assign a dollar value to the Tiffany ring. If your GF would like it that much more than I think it's a no brainer. There's always something to be said for having the real thing...the thing every vendor on here tries to replicate.

The ct size differential is probably not going to be noticeable at all -- we're talking probably 2/10 of a mm. Like your GF, mine is no diamond expert so if the ring looks good, it looks good.

Do what is going to make her the happiest if you can afford it.
