Howdy All!

I have the oppertunity to buy the following diamond for my future wife. She is 24 and wears a size 7 ring. I like the size and clarity but I am concerned about the J color. On the chart j is near colorless (right?) - well what does that mean. I don't want a colored diamond but the diamond is an ideal round cut - which is really good. Someone please help me...

Diamond specs:
Price: $2,854.00
Report: GIA
Shape: Round Ideal Cut
Carat: 0.91
Color: J
Clarity: VS2
Depth: 63.1
Table: 54
Crown Angle: 34.6
Crown %: 15.7
Pavilion Angle: 40.7
Pavilion %: 42.9
Girdle: Slightly Thick
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Negligible
Measurements: 6.12-6.17X3.88

Thanks in advance!!

Have you run the HCA? Looks a little deep... do more homework.

I wouldn't worry about a J if the cut is good (unless you or your wife-to-be is sensitive to color--which some pple are).... I've seen a J in an ideal cut and it's amazing.

Jennifer,

Thank you very much for the reply. What does HCA mean?

Holloway Cut Advisor. Go to the Pscope home page and at the top choose "Tools" and the "HCA"...this is a very helpful tool that uses the stone's measurments to estimate its output.... plug in the specs of your stone and see what comes up.... This is a good tool to weed out poor performers or confirm a stone with good specs. Also, it sounds like you might want to read up on some of the stuff in the "Knowledge" section of the forum...like cut/make specifications andwhat constitutes ideal proportions.

I can tell you, I have learned SO MUCH from Pscope and Garry (creator of the HCA-the "H" is for his last name) and it has helped me in my search for stones more than I can say.

Happy hunting.

"Initial content deleted!"

Is THIS it?

The stones looks decent - aside the somewhat deeper cut.

It is hard to say if "J" is safe - I bet it is in a stone less than 1 ct and with a very brilliant cut. I think "I" is supposed to be the commercial version of colorless.

The HCA... is a little cut grading application found under the link 'Cut Adviser" here. It is supposed to help estimate brilliance for round brilliants that do not fall within AGS0 proportions (with the respective premium)... among other things. It may help to take a look.
This particular stone gets a good score (1.3) being taxed a bit for spread only due to that depth.

Usually, deeper cut diamodns look smaller, but it is no just the total depth but where the extra weight is hidden that counts - usually a thick girdle has allot more impact on size than other details. For comparison, a 60% deep round of 0.9cts with thin/medium girdle would have a diameter of about 9.25mm - not a whole lot bigger than the 9.15 of your stone.

Given the description at Whiteflash, this stone should look very much like any H&A would from the top... not a bad thing at all.

Hope this helps.

The inclusion plot and Iscope below look safe, for what I know - there is a crystal under the table allright... but given the VS2 grade I would not expect this to be visible.

However, the stone has one strong contender listed by the same seller: THIS I-VS2. I wish there was an Iscope pic for it, but the numbers look all right from this side of the screen. And, to make things worse, another J-VS1 comes with better proportions (depth), spread, Iscope and clarity - as far as I see. Any thoughts?

Whiteflash has provided side-by-side pictures before, and I would definitely see at leats the two J's together. the VS1 piece seems particularly desirable given the comments on the cert

The picture above was not the right one... sorry for the confusion.
The VS1 got me a bit enthusiastic over the make of the clarity grade, so I thought I would point it out.
