I posted a question before regarding the purchase of my friends engagement ring that he never gave to his girlfriend. Here is some information from the invoice he sent me from cooldiamonds.com -- Please note: This is all the information I have.

"Round 2.51 ct diamond of F color and VS2 clarity. This diamond is accompanied by a certificate issued by the HRD set in"

Price paid in April 2007: $44,807.00

The diamond is mounted on a 3 diamond setting. The total ring is 3.5 ct. 2.51 center and 2 pear shaped diamonds on each side weighting .50 ct each.

He has offered it to me now for $16,000 .... Should I take it? OR buy a 1.24 ct Tiffany Novo for the same price. My GF likes both and would very happy with either. I do not know what to do. If the ring needs re-sized (i don''t know what size it is) does the size of the 3 diamonds have any inpact on that - for example if it needs to be smaller.

Please be realistic in your answers .... We all know bigger is better, but I would like an honest opinion from real women who would actually be wearing the ring on a day to day basis. My GF is very cute, makes plenty of money but is conservative in her spending.

Thanks for all of your help - I appreciate your time ............

Can you get the ring appraised by an independent appraiser? It could be a gorgeous stone, it could be a stone worth recutting or it could be a dog. You need more information about the 2.51 ct center stone. But I certainly would not give your gf the 3-stone ring just as it was bought by your friend. Most women do not appreciate a regiftted ering.

The Tiffany Novo is a beautiful ring.

Ditto the above highlighted. HRD are a reputable lab but an appraisal would be prudent if you are seriously considering for purchase.

Can you have a look at the cert, it should list the cut info on it. If you could post that, it would help us make a recommendation. As Lorelei said, HRD is a reputable grader, but we need to know how they graded the stone. (this might save you from going to the trouble of an IA)
