Hi all, I''m resubmitting my earlier post because I realized that the title wasn''t likely to catch the eye of all you cushion experts out there. Forgive me!
**

I love this stone, opinions please?

2.07c Cushion Brilliant
G VS2
8.09 x 7.34 x 4.88
66.5% D
63% T
TN-MED faceted
N Cul
N Flr
Ex Polish
VG Symm
L-W Ratio 1:1.1
$16,200

The story: I didn''t originally want to look at this stone because it is more than I wanted to spend and is more rectangular than I thought I would like. But the vendor convinced me it was a must see, so he called it in for me along with three other much squarer cushions.

Well. In person it was simply fabulous--it made the other three diamonds sitting next to it look like dull hunks of glass. Far more brilliant than any cushion I''ve seen thus far (although admittedly, thats only about 10-12 total at this point). Needless to say, I fell in love, even though the stone alone is about as much as we were intending to spend for the whole darn shebang--pave custom setting included.

[Now, I will pause here to recommend to you all not to go out and "just look at" stones that are out of your price range. This is just not wise. Please learn from me. ; ) ]

In any event, the question is now, should we purchase the stone?
We''ve decided that we''re willing to exceed the budget (dontcha just love how i keep saying we, when i should really be saying he?) for an absolutely fabulous stone, but I really want to make sure this is it. The vendor (whom I trust very much) told me, only after I asked his opinion, that this is one of the best cut cushions he''s seen in around. BUT, I knew I couldn''t do anything without first soliciting the counsel of my fellow P-scopers. SO, my wise friends, here goes:

1) Do the specs look ok? (I know you''ve got to see em to really judge em, but does anything raise a red flag?)

2) Considering how well cut the stone appears to be, does the price seem fair?

3) If the stone looks great to my eye, do I need to do any of those funky tests you all are always talking about to assure myself that the cut is OK--i.e., lightscope, brilliantscope, whatever-else-scope--or is that more for RBs? and finally . . .

4) Am I jumping the gun? I''ve been "in the market", so to speak, for about 4-5 weeks--but have pretty much been obsessively researching/shopping ever since. (I may soon be fired.) The only other CC stones I''ve seen besides the four from my vendor friend, tho, have been during casual drop-ins at diamond district storefronts ("uh, hi, whatcha got in a cushion?"). I''m going back to the vendor to look at one or two more stones next week, but assuming those don''t hold a candle to this . . . should I buy??? Or does one need to look for months and months in order to be educated enough to make the right choice on a stone? There it is folks, the 16 thousand dollar question!

Wow, my typing fingers (all two of them) are tired, so your eyes must be too. But thank you, thank you, thank you so much in advance for your advice--you don''t know how much it is, has been and will be appreciated. Yep, I pretty much think I might love you guys, and I don''t even know you!!

Thanks a million, REENA

Hey- did it have a bow-tie?

Hey...a thought... would you be interested in getting a stone with more efficiencies, i.e., eye clean/H...that might get you back to your original pricing. I hate paying for Vs when there are some exceptional SIs out there.

I don't know if anyone can be called a cushion expert. Maybe Dave Atlas...

There are just no good stats for cushions. It sounds gorgeous, though. I guess my question to you is: does it make your heart beat wildly and your face flush and your hands shake? If so, it's worth the money.

Hi,

No, there is no bow tie whatsoever. (While it's less square than I was originally thinking, it's still pretty square overall--1:1.1 ratio.)

Jennifer, I agree 100%, I think if this stone were an H SI1 it would be at least a little more affordable, and it's tough because I have no problem with an SI1 stone. The G color is really nice though.

But yes, I'm really in love with the stone, I think I may have even dreamed about it! It is just as sparkly as can be, especially for an antique-y style fancy. I decided I'm taking the weekend off from looking at or thinking about diamonds, and then I'm going to go in on Monday and look at it with a level head next to one or two other stones. If it's still the one, then it's the one!

I'm so excited. Next I'm going to have to ask for your help in picking a setting . . .

Wow, I am looking for just about the exact same stone you are looking for. We have been seriously looking for a few months. We've probably seen a good 20 to 30 stones, and with the exception of one which was VERY deep (78%), none of them spoke to me at all.

I think there is so much variation among cushions and how they look, and people have something very specific in mind when they're looking, which makes it hard. The numbers and specs on your stone look GREAT from my perspective, and if the stone really spoke to you, and you loved it, I'd say go for it. I think it'll take a long time for you to find another one you love. Are you willing to wait? I am to a point where I almost regret passing on a 78% depth, because I have not seen anything else I like!

My only concern is the shape of this stone. How important is the square shape to you? I would not want you to go for a more rectangualar stone on impulse, and perhaps later regret it... I would certainly take the weekend to think it through, and then if you see the stone again Monday, and the shape is okay and you and still love it, go for it!

Good luck!

Hi Reena,

Sounds like you love the stone. Even though my boyfriend and I have been looking at cushions for awhile, he tells me he has yet to find the "perfect" stone that is the "one". Therefore, I think it's a matter of personal taste - if it speaks to you and it's within your (albeit stretched) budget, go for it! I personally have seen only a few stones and I think they're all gorgeous (I'm not as picky as he is). I do think that the price you mentioned is a bit high. I saw a beautiful stone recently that was a G VS2 1.51 carat with nice specs, and I was quoted $8,500. This was also in the NYC diamond district. So the price you gave does seem high. However, if you're literally dreaming about it?!? It must be a sign

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input and I'm glad you guys don't think I'm being rash.

As for the shape of the stone, I'd sort of determined on the gemappraisers fancy shape selctor that anything over a 1:1.05 would be too rectangular for me--but turns out that the 1:1.1 didn't actually look that way in person. And my vendor tells me that the really square ones tend to look smaller and sparkle less . . . In any event I'm completely happy with the way this one looked. Just goes to show you can't do everything on the computer . . .

Sparkler, I too looked at cushions in the DD and saw 2c stones ranging from $6k to $15k. So yes, agreed, this one is a little high in price comparatively. (Although who knows what they were showing me in those stores.) I'm just hoping that my vendor is correct that the increase in price is attributable to the cut and brillance of the stone. I don't mind paying more as long as that's the case.

I'm going to look at some other stones on Monday, and will definitely report back with the verdict! I feel like if I walk in there after the weekend and still love it, I'm going to go for it.

reena...is he going to give it to you for the price listed?

His price is a few hundred dollars less than the lowest price listed on Pricescope (and about a thousand dollars less than the non-PS discount price on WF).
