I purchased a 1.01, VVS2, I Color Carat Princess Cut from Blue Nile and waiting for it to arrive. Now I'm shopping for a setting for it and the one that I've been looking at is part of the Scott Kay line. Two local stores have it but they are a little different in total carat weight. One is 1/3 total carat weight and the other is 1/5 total carat weight. The 1/3 is about $350 more and just wondering if there is a noticeable difference if I held them side by side. Is it worth paying the extra $350 for the 1/3 total carat weight setting? Any help would be much appreciated.

Which setting is it? Do you have photos?

I don't know much about diamonds but I'm thinking that there shouldn't be that big of a difference between the two settings due to the amount of stones they have in them. Any advice would be great.

Since there is approximately 80 diamonds on the setting the size difference would be minuscule. If you can’t see he difference with your eyes then there’s really no point paying for it IMO.

Thanks. That is pretty much what I was thinking.

You didn't ask, so feel free to ignore me...the diamonds on the side of the shank will eat anything you put against it, so you will need a spacer band between then and your wedding band.

JamesAllen has a similar ring that eliminates the diamonds on the sides and, I think, has a prettier gallery.

These replace the diamonds with scroll work which is quite nice.

But, I actually prefer this side view if it is in budget.

JA will set a diamond you purchased elsewhere for $100 or will send you the setting for the diamond to be set locally.

Your jeweller may also be able to get any of these.

Thanks for the info. Those setting are all really nice.

The big stores like Jareds all sell the lifetime warranty on the setting. I like the idea of her being able to go in at anytime she's near by to have it inspected. I'd hate for her to snag the ring on something and the prongs become loose and some how the diamond gets lost. Am I over thinking this warranty thing?

"Warranties" like those offered by Kay, Jared, etc. are worthless. ANY reputable vendor/jeweler will offer the same -- usually for FREE.

I also wanted to add that it's not as simple as just "stopping by and having them fix your ring"... You typically have to leave it to be sent off for repair or whatever and it can take weeks. Even if they have a "jeweler" in-house that does it, it can still take a while. I would never pay for a warranty. Doesn't Scott Kay have a warranty??

This is why you pay for insurance on her ring. You shouldn't have to pay for anything else, because the ring is covered. "Warranties" like these are just another way for these B&M's to make a little more money. Also, if Scott Kay warranties their pieces, any work by another jeweler may void it.

Yes, you are overthinking the warranty thing. Not only do most jewelers offer this service, good jewelery insurers also offer this service at the store of your choice (e.g., Jewelers Mutual). In fact, accepting a warranty from one of these companies can complicate getting a setting fixed/replaced if they mangle it. They will only fix things themselves, even if they have shown themselves to be incompetent to do so.

Plus, all the stores you have no inhouse gemologists and send most of the work out for work (or should given the mangling I've observed). They employ sales people not jewelers. Many of those companies have had complaints of swapped diamonds, manged rings, lost meleee diamonds, and poor workmanship. I would honestly rather buy from JA or a independent jeweler that can order in a stock setting from a reputable casting house. The issue is not the Scott Kay setting, per se, but that it is set improperly. I have a coworker who purchased a Scott Kay pave setting from Kay jeweller and hand them set a gemstone (she did not ask me). That setting was shipped to them as a size 6.5 and they altered it to be a 8.5. No wonder all the pave diamonds were falling out and the entire ring was warped. It was the setter not the setting.

Speaking of snagging, I'd be less worried about snagging a prong and more worried about something getting snagged (sweaters, her hair, etc) in the fake cathedral style of that Scott Kay you are looking at. Not to mention collecting schmutz in there. :eek2:

Where are you located, generally, so that we can recommend a PS recommended vendor to you in your locale?
