I live in Illinois. I was recently talking to a jeweler, and he said if he ships my ring out of state, I could save 9% on the cost of the ring. I''m guessing because this would avoid Illinois sales tax.

Is this common practice and has anyone ever done this???

Thank you.

He''s probably talking about how to avoid his requirement to collect sales taxes from you. This is a highly questionable tactic and it doesn''t affect your taxes anyway. If you live in Chicago, you are expected to pay ''use tax'' on all of your taxable purchases where sales tax was not collected by the merchant.

Here''s what Illinois Department of Revenue has to say on the matter.
