shared prong bands: a bit confused

i''ve read many threads on here about shared prong bands eating into e-rings, i know these rings can be soldered or a spacer can be used, but i just wondered what the point of shared prongs were if it leaves the diamonds girdles exposed, is there something i''m missing?

I love the way they look, while I don''t have a shared prong eternity, I have a barset, and my girdle is also exposed as well, I love the look of it with my ering, but yes the girdle will eventually eat away at my gold, so I will be wearing a spacer. I love the versatility of the look of being able to wear it alone as well.
