Shallow cut for studs

Someone here posted comments about preferring a more shallow cut for diamonds used in studs, and posted the specific depth specifications he or she used in sourcing those diamonds. I trolled the archives using the search engine under this topic, but failed to find the one I remember.

Does anyone remember where to find it? And what do you think about it? I saw the one with pics that showed the ideal diamond showing more grease collecting on specific parts of the stones.

Will I save substantially more $$s going to a more shallow cut for earring stones? What depth parameters should I use in looking for them?

Thanks!

I think ideal cut stones are perfect for studs! I do have a shallower stone for a pendant solely because the stone came from my mother and Brian Gavin recut it for me to improve it, and it just had to be a little shallow. But I do not consider that it looks better than my ideal cuts at all. Many people here end up using earring stones for sidestones for rings or eventually decide to upgrade their studs, and it is just a wise idea to get ideal cuts, in my opinion.

I don't think you'll save a substantial amount. You can get GIA excellent cut or AGS ideal cut and not hearts and arrows stones which command a higher price. I am sure that Yekutiel can find you a perfect pair!

DS,

IF I were going to use them eventually as side stones, I guess I could go with a much lower color and save a few bucks there!

No way you can use them as side stones with your new diamond! You wouldn't be able to lift your hand! ;)) I was thinking maybe for a right hand ring!

You really need to go to Phoenix's listing for her items for sale (go to pre-loved forum, her thread, and find the link) and send her a message telling her you are looking for a diamond pair. They are higher color than you'd need, but if the price was right, they would be perfect If she decides to sell them.

I will right now! Perhaps the price WILL be right...if so, YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I would rather compromise on cut on my hand than my ears. My hand gets a lot more head-on light.

If I was looking for RB earrings I'd be looking for exactly that, shallow stones (specfically stones with shallow pavilions) - all the benefits and none of the downsides :sun: It can be surprisingly hard to find a nicely matched shallower pair, though! What exactly are you looking for?

ETA: just saw your later post - good luck!

How shallow? Do you have specs?

I would love to have at least 2cttw. Do you have any suggestions of pairs? Obviously, I don't mind color or I wouldn't have bought my large stone!

Specs? Hmm... not exactly, just shallower pavilions. I wouldn't go shallower than 40.4. I don't worry about about a bit of over-obstruction in photos (darkening in the photos outside of the eight arrows) - earrings won't have that problem of objects leaning over them and blocking light, after all.

Found these in a quick search - you'd need to request more info
