How long does it take a skilled jeweler to set a round in a standard 6 prong setting? Should I be wary of jewelers that "do it while you wait" in 20-30 min? From reading the forums it seems to take some jewelers a day or two or is that b/c of volume?
Setting a diamond in a standard 6 prong setting can be done in 5 to 10 minutes. If you have to leave your diamond or have it leave your sight even for 5 minutes have them give you a receipt that states exactly what they are receiving from you. (i.e Received a 1.04 ct H VS1 GIA grading report #12568900) Provide a copy of the grading report for identification of your diamond. Make sure you know how to identify your own diamond. Inspect it and verify it is your diamond in the same condition you brought it in (no chips if that is the case) before you leave the jeweler. As stated this should protect your investment or give you some recourse should something happen to your diamond.
I Had a "while you wait" appiontment and it took an hour to set the stone. They also had to modify the shank adding extra time. And do a search on the jeweler you plan to use. If you own your diamond and did nor buy it from the jeweler that will set the stone it will be " At your own risk" They will make you sign a waiver in case of any damages. Check on getting it insured before having it set. For round stones risk of damage is low unless there are inclusions on or near the girdle.
I am not a diamond expert (but was in your position last week and that is what i leaned. My stone was a princess cut the highest risk of damage while setting)
