Good afternoon everyone--

Most of you know the whole saga over my stones and settings, I have posted all the gory details before. I upgraded to the 2 carat oval stone about a month ago, and unfortunately was unable to put the stone into my new pave setting due to spinning issues. It was too top heavy. So, we mounted it in my old platinum setting that had the invisible set diamonds that had given me a lot of issues. I knew the setting would be temporary until I found something else I liked. I am glad I planned on finding a new setting, because I lost ANOTHER stone out of my invisible setting this weekend. It was right next to the stone they replaced a few months ago. I only wore the setting for about 6 weeks before losing another stone. I was pretty mad. I figured I could get a few months to maybe a year out of it at least. So, I took the ring into my now FORMER jeweler. I called beforehand and made an appointment and told them what had happened. When I got there, I told them I wasn''t going to deal with diamonds popping out anymore and wanted a different setting. The lady I always deal with (they assign you a sales member who basically, and unfortunately, deals with you every time you come in) took the ring back to the jewelers bench. She came walking out and said they were going to fix it. I told her I didn''t want to fix it at this point, I wanted to look at other options. She told me "all they have to do is squeeze the sides of the mounting and it will tighten up the diamond". What??!! SQUEEZE the metal? I insisted that I really wanted to look at something else. So, she copped an attitude and told me if I wanted to just give up, we could look at other settings. This is when I decided that I would never go back, upgrade policy or not. We looked at mountings, and the whole time she kept suggesting that I add more metal to the invisible diamonds to make them secure. I think it would look goofy. I kept telling her that I just wanted a different mounting. She was really persistent about me keeping the old setting. I should add here that this poor mounting has been through so much--sent off twice, reset twice, mangled metal (jewelers fault) has had to be re-laid along the stones, and it was to the point that the mounting was warped. It wasn''t even on both sides. I really had to feel sorry for it!

So, I found a mounting I liked. Its a pretty platinum 3.5 mm with channelset rounds coming up the sides into a cathedral setting. Its simpler, less prone to trouble, and more durable. I will never own invisible settings ever again. The setting is picked, and she tells me its going to be $1200 difference in price. I realize the price of platinum has gone up, but I am swapping platinum FOR platinum, not upgrading. In fact, I DOWNGRADED in both tcw of diamonds in the setting and the amount of metal. This ring weighs half of what my old one did. So I asked her why the huge price difference. She told me it was to recoop the $1900 they have to spend to reset all the invisible set diamonds BEFORE they can re-sell it. I told her I was under the impression that I had a trade in/up policy. She told me my mounting was only worth $2800. I told her that was my OLD mounting in white gold. We paid $1400 to UPGRADE to this mounting 3 years ago. She said we didn''t pay that and that the computer doesn''t lie. Then WHY are they doing repairs on a mounting I purchased from them but they say they have no record of? I looked at the price on the new mounting and it was listed at $2895, so I asked her why it wasn''t an even trade if their records don''t show what I paid for the platinum mounting. She says that price labels are a "guideline" not a set price. At this point, I am sorry to say, I lost my cool. I told her that I feel like everytime I come in there, they talk me in circles, and I feel like I get screwed. I told her I was not paying anymore for a setting than the price difference, and if I had to eat the $1400 for the earlier upgrade, that was fine, but they were not getting another dime out of me. I also asked her why it was false advertisement to have a price listed on a label on a ring and not honor that price. She told me that I should just keep the defunct mounting if I didn''t want to pay the difference. I questioned the trade in/up policy because it doesn''t state that I am responsible for their cost to redo a mounting after it has been traded in. She refused to explain or let me see any written details of the trade in policy. So I told her if she didn''t want to work something out I would go elsewhere. After 45 more minutes of negotiations with her and the owner (who hid in the back the whole time) she agreed to a lateral trade. I guess persistence and questioning paid off. My stone was mounted, it looks good, problem solved, ring is intact.

HOWEVER, they have lost me as a customer. We have done a lot of business with them. It has gotten worse every time I have gone back to that store. I have learned that they are not forthright and honest AT ALL. I have spent enough time in there that I hear the same sales pitch over and over, the over inflated prices, the schmoozing when you are a first time customer. If you question something or don''t like their work, they are unapologetic, don''t own the mistake, and make you feel like crap. The only reason I stayed with them this long was because of the trade policy. But since it seems like that is a load of garbage, I have no reason to return there. I hope I don''t need a jeweler for a while because I don''t know where I would go yet, but anything has to be better than what I have been dealing with for the past year.

Sorry for the rant--just wanted to share the story. At least I won''t have to go through all this with them again. If anyone from Kansas City is looking for a local jeweler, post before you do so. Unless I am asked, I won''t post the store on here, (I try to keep it clean) but if opinions are needed, I will strongly steer you away from where I went. Hope you all are having a great post St. Paddy''s day.

hairgirl, I'm glad you seem to finally have resolution on your ring. I re-read your posts on this ring and all the swaps/upgrades/setting changes that have occurred and I have to ask the obvious regarding the original cracking and more recent stones popping out - are you hard on your rings? For instance, do you wear them when doing things like washing dishes, gardening, unloading the dishwasher, cooking, etc? If so, I'd recommend that you start taking off your ring for household work just in case...When I realized how easy it was to crack a ring doing simple, everyday household activities, I started removing my rings when doing so, just to be safe.

That said, while I understand why you were upset about that radiant being physically smaller than your previous stone, I do think, after reading your posts/threads, that the store you've been dealing with has been quite accommodating in terms of always trying to get you what you want. I think that we always look from our consumer perspective on these situations, but I do think that given the amount of issues you've had, it's also important to look at this from the perspective of the shop as well. Imagine you being on the other side of the sales counter and having someone come in several times in a short time span, each time, unhappy with either the stone or the setting. I'm not saying that the shop has had no part to play in all of this, however, I cannot imagine that any shop would want anything less than every customer coming away from their shop happy and completely satisfied. I'm sorry you've had so many issues, and I do hope that they are finally resolved and you can enjoy your ring without any further issues or bad thoughts.

So sorry to hear this happened to you. I don''t blame you I wouldn''t go back if I was treated like that either. I hope your lateral trade holds up okay and doesn''t have durability issues. Was it the same setting? I know when I traded in my old setting my jeweler offer to give me more for it (without me asking or saying anything about it) just because platinum had gone up. Sorry to hear you had to fight them just to get a lateral trade.

Sending you wishes of a kind and talented jeweler to come your way

Sorry you''ve had so many issues with this jeweler. Sounds like it''s best for you to sever the ties.

There are so many jewelers out there, you should just find another one where you can shop comfortably and forget about this one.

No, I don''t wear my rings when doing anything labor intensive. I always take them off when I am cleaning, doing dishes, folding laundry, or using chemicals at work. I don''t think I am overly hard on them, no more so than normal wear. If anything, I was more cautious after I lost the first stone out of the setting. I read through a lot of posts on here about the delicateness of those settings and really took extra precautions to prevent further problems with it. I never use ultrasonics on it (don''t even own one, so temptation couldn''t occur, lol) and always used a soft baby toothbrush only when needed, and that was only on the center stone. I rarely used the brush on the invisible setting portion. I can''t say with 100% certainty that I never bumped my ring or anything, but usually if I did hit it on something, it was my center stone that got bumped, not the setting portion, and it wasn''t a hard knock or anything.

I can see your point about the times I have been back to the store, and yes, I have worked with the public myself, so I did try to put myself into their shoes, especially when I got really frustrated. I have dealt with frustrated customers on many occasions myself. Some of the things I was unhappy about were not the jewelers fault, they were my own ignorance (pre PS days) and I fully hold myself accountable for those. The stone switch from the radiant to the oval was 100% my issue. I didn''t have the knowledge I do now when I purchased that stone. But I will say that when I upgraded to the oval, it was not a monetary lateral move either. I paid more for the oval. The jeweler still made money off me upfront, and had the radiant to re-sell to someone else. I think they came out at the very least even, most likely ahead. As far as the setting issues, I place that squarely on the bench person who has set my jewelry. Each time I took the ring back to have prongs redone, diamonds replaced in the setting, or mounting head changed, I was charged for a portion of those services as well. This hasn''t been a free ride for me on the complaint train.

When I put the radiant in it in October, I paid the difference for the stone (nearly $2k) and paid $150 for it to be mounted. When it didn''t look good, I took it back. They fixed it and I wasn''t charged that time. When I lost the invisible set diamond, I had to pay for that to be fixed as well (appx. $200) because my mounting head was tweaked by the people who replaced the invisible stone. I felt like I shouldn''t be charged for that since it wasn''t my error, but I dealt with it and paid it. When we went with the pave setting, I paid $250 for the mounting of the stone. With the oval, I also paid $250 for the stone to be mounted. I feel like I have paid enough to them through all of this, and I was done with the pillage of my wallet. So yes, I have compassion for the jeweler, but at the same time I don''t. When working with the public, it is your brand you are selling. And with that brand comes not only courtesy and politeness, but a product that should stand on its own merit. I felt that for what I had paid, I wasn''t getting the best quality. I also felt like when I nicely and politely brought up the concerns I had with it, I was cut off at the pass, and the validity of my concern was swept under the carpet. I don''t feel they were wronged or taken advantage of at all. They have come out ahead and made their money. Now if they could make their customer service as good, there would have never been a complaint to begin with. I am a pretty tolerant person (usually

) but when I feel like I am getting screwed over, like I felt in this situation, it was time to stand up for myself. However, its all over with at this point. I am sure I made my mistakes too, but the best way for me to do the situation justice is to find an alternative jeweler in the future. Thanks for your reply surf--I appreciate it!!

I just wanted to present another perspective...and I''m glad you could look at it from that side and move on. It IS shocking how poorly the work quality is of many benchmen/women are out there. I think most consumers just take the jeweler''s word as the letter of the law and dont question anything. I also think most people are far more forgiving than those on PS so perhaps many shops aren''t accustomed to their customers being so particular about things. I''ve had a local jewelry turn down jobs from me and I suspect he realizes I have an eagle eye and wont stand for any little imperfections...You should start asking around for jeweler recommendations. When you see someone with jewelry that you admire, ask them who they use. That''s the best way to find a good jeweler. Or, if you have a nice local dept store like Nordstrom''s or Saks, ask their fine jewelry dept who they use for repairs as they all use the best local guys for their customer repairs...

Thats so true. I am pretty sure I have the eagle eye gene too!!

I know I expect a certain level of perfection and maybe this jeweler just wasn''t the fit for me. We do have Nordy''s here, so that is a good idea to ask who they use. I know I am very leery of going just anywhere without some serious recommendations first. I know I will find someone else to use in jewelry repairs. It will just take some time and homework. Thanks again for the advice!
