Hi. I''m looking for some quick advice. I have found a diamond at goodoldgold. 1.22 ct round brilliant stone. I am looking to surprise with the engagement so she won''t help pick out the setting. She is a fashionable lady... I know she likes the Tiffany - prong. I could play it safe and get her a replica of that in platinum. Thing is I like the Vatche Royal Crown but she has never seen that. Do I go adventurous with something beautiful she has never seen or tried on her finger before... or do I go with a simple setting that I know she likes and then have the opportunity to upgrade later?

Any direction here is appreciated!

I'd propose with a simple setting, and let her choose her dream setting. I love the Vatche Royal Crown, but nice for her to have a voice in what she will be wearing long term. To me it's a win win situation. Many people here have done just so. My way, is just playing it safe, but can't imagine she wouldn't be thrilled with your choice. I know, not much help. good luck!!

Couldn''t agree more with Kaleigh. Start off simple and suprise her, then you both can choose the dream setting together!

Thritto on going simple and letting her pick!

Another vote for a simple setting and letting her choose.

I was so fortunate when my husband decided to suprise me with a solitaire and then offer to let me pick a setting.

This worked out well for both of us:
1. He was able to spend more money on the center stone by getting a $150 solitaire setting
2. He was able to keep the whole thing a total secret - I was FLOORED when he propsed!
3. We were able to go look for a setting I turly loved, and I wound up with the best of both worlds - a gorgeous stone and my dream setting!

Thank you for all of the advice... I think I am going to get a simple setting in white gold and then let her pick out the platinum setting she likes (I know she prefers platinum). Will other jewelers give credit for the price of the simple setting or should I just plan to lose the $200 on the setting when we find the setting she wants? My other option is I could get the setting online when I purchase the diamond and then send it back to them to be reset in the preferred setting? This would be an upgrade that I would get full credit for, correct?

Can someone please comment on how I do this so that I don''t waste my money on a temp setting?

If you are concerned about losing the 200 on the temp setting. Just propose with the diamond. You won''t get credit for the other setting, just for the metal, which won''t be much.

I think it would be nice to propose with the simple setting, so she can wear the ring. Also, she can take her time finding her dream setting.

I'm in the same dilemma. Though my gf fully expects me to pick the "right one". She wouldn't go for a plain setting and have it reset later. I'm interested in a $2500 scott kay, I think she'll like it but you never now. Robbin's Brothers has the ring I want but requires a special order. According to them, there is no refunds on special order items. I'm trying to find a retailer who would take it back for credit, at least, if need be.
