Yesterday, we reported that the Republican-led Congress betrayed the American people by selling our internet privacy. But campaign finance data suggests that our elected officials in Congress sell out to special interests for remarkably little money.

Less than three months into the disastrous Trump administration, Republicans in Congress have undone numerous regulations put in place by former President Barack Obama. A week ago, the U.S. Senate passed legislation — along party lines — that would allow Americans’ internet histories to be bought and sold by large telecom companies like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T, without their knowledge or consent. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives did the same thing.

However, as the Resistance Report notes, “one bit of consolation lies in the transparency of campaign finance records. Thanks to data compiled by the National Institute on Money in State Politics, we can find out exactly how much each member of Congress who voted to kill internet privacy received in campaign contributions from the telecom industry in the most recent election cycle.”

In the House, Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon) is the favorite of the telecom industry, with over $155,000 in donations in the most recent election cycle. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-Louisiana) sold out to the industry for a paltry $300.

In the Senate, John Thune (R-South Dakota) received the most money from the telecommunications industry, with over $215,000 in donations from industry PACs and employees. Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) sold out for the least, voting to kill internet privacy rules for just $1,000 in donations.

Obviously this entire thing is horrible and bad, but I can't even look at McConnell without thinking of turtles. Which I love, so I have very mixed feelings about hating him even though he resembles something I like.

Billboards target lawmakers who voted to let ISPs sell user information

When Congress voted in March to block FCC privacy rules and let internet service providers sell users’ personal data, it was a coup for the telecom industry. Now, the nonprofit, pro-privacy group Fight for the Future is publicizing just how much the industry paid in an attempt to sway those votes.

The group unveiled four billboards, targeting Reps. Marsha Blackburn and John Rutherford, as well as Sens. Jeff Flake and Dean Heller. All four billboards, which were paid for through donations, were placed in the lawmakers’ districts. “Congress voting to gut Internet privacy was one of the most blatant displays of corruption in recent history,” Fight for the Future co-founder Tiffiniy Cheng said in a statement on the project.

The billboards accuse the lawmakers of betraying their constituents, and encourage passersby to call their offices.
