We are in the process of upgrading my engagement ring. To this end, we have traded in a diamond in order to purchase this pear diamond.

The vendor offers the option of custom settings. I have decided to take them up on the this. Here are some of the inspiration sketches that I have sent them. The sketches don't have milgrain but show beading instead. I have requested claw prongs if prongs are necessary. I am having difficulty with some of the design. 1) how to make the shank join the bezel smoothly. My design feels a bit abrupt to me. 2) how to design an under gallery/basket that will allow in enough light to the diamond, protect it and still be easy to clean. The diamond is a bit deep and I want to allow adequate light so that it can sparkle.

Please offer your advice and suggestions. I am completely new at this and know absolutely nada about design and setting manufacture or the steps involved. What can I expect in the design process? How do you read a CAD? I will be sure to post designs when I receive them from the vendor. Thank you in advance for your help. Will look forward to your suggestions and experiences. Please forgive me if I don't replay immediately as will be out of town Saturday. Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

Hello OP. Not knowing the cost of a custom setting with the diamond vendor; have you considered talking to Caysie at CVB designs? She's an expert at designing settings for antique stones. I would consider all options so that you get exactly what you want. Good luck:wavey:

I love your sketches, you seem to have a great idea about what you want. I would encourage you to remember that your jeweler is an expert on creating settings; you don't need to design every element yourself. I agree with seeking out Caysie, from the rings of hers that I have seen.

DK made a ring for me that has some very similar design elements, but my small cushion is haloed. I think he could do a great job making this ring for you. I am adding a picture of mine so that you can see what a nice job he did.

I agree with all the others suggestions. Your sketch is lovely. What is your budget for the setting?

Ohh, I just adore that stone!! So happy that she's going to a PS home! I am super impressed with your sketch! Have you browsed the Singlestone rings for some ideas in terms of the gallery/shank? They have every flavor of antique ring on their site. Lang's Antiques is another good place to get inspiration. Without knowing your budget or what DZ has quoted you, I'd definitely reach out to Caysie. Her work is impeccable and she knows how to best showcase antique stones to its best advantage. Please let us know what you decide on! I can't wait to see it!

OP...may I suggest that you do do prongs so the metal is not right along the girdle. This will help with letting a little more light
into the stone. I wear a pear ering so I know how important light is for pears. The metal can very closely follow the outline of the pear.
Use maybe 4 (or more) tiny claw prongs to hold it in. Something like this...(this is a CVB setting to give credit, not sure if it belongs to a PSer
but if it does...just lovely)

OP, I have your stone's twin:) I am posting some pics of the gallery of my ring (CVB) and some of the bezel to give you some ideas. I can tell you that my stone is VERY lively and plenty of light gets in because it lights up like a firecracker. My stone is cut almost identical to yours. The pics look chunky because they are close up- but the gallery is VERY dainty. I don't know how she did it, I can see the whole diamond underneath but it's protected.

Your stone and setting are lovely soxfan! The bezel does not seem to affect it at all. It is very bright! Your stone is also bigger which may* be
helping it. My advice above comes from my experience of bezeling a stone. It was a lively little stone until I bezeled it. It still performs in the
right lighting but in most lighting, sadly no;(. If I had to opportunity to NOT bezel that stone I would go back and have it done with petite prongs
in a "fake" bezel. To be completely transparent the stone I bezeled was small...about 5mm.

Edit...Soxfan, you said they were twins...is your stone about the same size? It looks huge!

Edit (again)...OP - maybe this is where you can talk to DZ and ask them how they think your stone
will perform with or without the bezel...try to get some opinions from people that can see your stone
in person.

I think most chose a bezel on a pears to avoid the tip prongs. Although, Lauren's VC has prongs. I need to go look at that again. My girdle was faceted. I wonder if I went without a bezel if I could be getting even MORE light play.

I'm so excited to see what you do with this gorgeous diamond! Please keep us updated!

What a beautiful pear
