I don't think it's a waste I've been saying for a long time there has been a global backlash against terrorism and a negative sentiment/movement against multiculturalism and immigration as a reflex response to this, and a really conservative protectionistic movement back towards a golden conservative age of nationalism in many countries all over the world. No matter what side of politics or how you might feel about it doesn't mean it isn't happening across Europe, the UK, the US and Australia. In some cases, Belgium comes to mind they do need to screen who crosses into their borders better.

This. I find it concerning because of the history. Europe has got to be more than concerned too. They are more honest about their history (in general) than we are here.

But around this house we tend to see it (in both Europe and the US) more (or certainly as much) as a panicked rural backlash against those perceived as urban elites. Of course the urban/rural friction is a very very very old tune indeed. Nowadays, rural people feel abandoned - by urban people, and by their own young, who are shedding their religion, their rural lifestyles, and finally, the rural places themselves. I say that living in a state whose economy is pretty much only agriculture and oil. That's about it. Anything else is small potatoes by comparison. And driving through the small towns? I'd rather gnaw off a limb than live in "the country". It's bleak. And boring as hell. It's no wonder the kids are fleeing. Now of course, the most loved political rhetorical device is saying "It's not your fault." So blame the cities, blame brown people, blame anything but their own unwillingness to find some way to adapt to the changes. It's why drug abuse is so ridiculously high in "the country".

And the change cannot be stopped. Thinking so is the biggest delusion I see.

It's going to be a wild ride for the foreseeable future, as people fight the inevitable. Seems humans can't do change without a lot of self-inflicted pain until we wear ourselves out with it for a bit.

This is absolutely true. But if people in Europe are feeling that the migrants moving to Europe are not assimilating to the culture in which they land then it will create this kind of sentiment. If there are enclaves of people who do not attempt to fit in it will certainly cause fear in the minds of the local population. From reading about Kurz and the far right FPO they feel it is costing the people too much as well. They do not have the land mass or $ of the US either. There has to be some attempt to see the issue from both sides rather than deciding they are the next rising of Nazism.

The trend is your friend. France, Germany, Austin and Great Britain have all elected a more right (to too much right imho). FEAR. Fear of terrorism, frankly they have a lot more to fear then we do here (although soon enough we will be dealing with nuclear N Korea brought on by big mouth Trump). All that said, I guess a lot of people fear losing their 'whiteness' their 'religion', their 'traditions', as can be seen here in the USA, take for instance "Merry Christmas" I have said, I continue to say it, and I have mostly 90% at least had people either not answer me or a thanks. Now the muslims are coming... Sharia taking over the USA or Vienna who knows. FEAR. FEAR. Le Pen did not win in France and Germany. France and Germany have the largest muslim population. Austrians feel afraid. To some extent I can understand this, but as I'm an American I have encountered people of all races my whole life. (and religions). I think muslims are about 5-7% of Austrian's citizens. In the USA our muslim population is about 1% of our citizens. As I said, FEAR is what drives people label all muslims are terrorists I mean how do you know?

I like the fact that the guy is 31, very young for a leader, we need to move the boomers out and get some young ideas. There is nothing wrong with limiting people into your country if the quota has been met, the problem arises in that some people going to back their home country means certain death.. sad. Time will tell if Austria slips into white nationalism. I hope not.

I find the right-wing sentiment sweeping the developed world very concerning. Merkel may have retained her position in the recent election but she is greatly weakened, and with the AfD, a far-right party has gained power in Germany for the first time in sixty years.

After WWII people were so completely horrified at what far-right politics had done to humanity, and so very grateful for the freedom and dignity that had been bought with millions of innocent lives, that we have had decades of humane politics.

Now the uneducated and the narcissistic are forgetting all those lessons. WWII has receded too far into the past and humanity is going to have to learn those lessons all over again. I have no idea what to do about all this right-wing sentiment or where it will end.

I think mass, uncontrolled immigration has destabilized some societies by blurring their traditional identities, and the fear wrought by terrorism has sent people down a knee-jerk rabbit hole of fear, clinging to politicians who promise to crack down on both immigration and terrorism.

Nevertheless, anyone who supports far-right politics should read about World War II and hang their heads in shame.
