Hi all,

About 3 years ago, i told you all about my e-ring journey starting with the purchase of the sapphire and then the custom Singlestone setting. Well, unfortunately, the sapphire (heat only) was scratched sometime last week, and i am trying to figure out what to do. The abrasion is just off of the table where 3 different facets meet, see below. I tried contacting Roger Dery who cut the stone, but im yet to hear anything back one week later.

In your experience, can these sort of things be corrected? I've included a picture but its extremely faint... All i have for a camera is my trusty Iphone. The white mark on the scratch is reflection, and not the stone. It seems to be an abrassion, but i worry its a chip, if thats even possible. Can i bring this to anyone or need this be a specialist?

Thank you all,

D

It’s hard to see but looks like it could be a chip. I’d continue to try to get in touch with Roger. He’s probably preparing for Tucson.

Do you have any perspective on how hard it would be to remove the stone from the setting? Singlestone is saying that i should send it to them to do it. I have some good local jewelers, but im not sure whether i should trust them on those one. Its a platinum setting.

Definitely is a small chip however it can be fixed with a touch up. Best case fudge the star facet angle a little, at worst 2 tiers of facets fudged if it is a deep chip. Edit: Going off what i can see in the photos.

Yes, it’s a chip sadly. Sapphires can and do chip. Either a repolish / adjust to facet can remove / disguise it or leave it. Both my yellow sapphire ring and ruby ring have minuscule chips as well. It happens. And yes, diamonds chip too. Hardness relates to abrasive strength, not ability to weather hard knocks unfortunately. Don’t wear your rings doing housework or gardening - that’s my advice after the event!
