sapphire dilemma!

This is a very good dilemma to have: : =)
I was the lucky PSer to purchase that beautiful sapphire on Jeff White's latest Gem Scoop! Yay!
It was meant to be used in a pendant. Last year I was so fortunate to be able to purchase one of his cushion cuts which was used to create a sapphire ring with a diamond halo and 2 trap side stones. I thought the pendant would be a beautiful compliment and start a little set going.
Well now that I have received the sapphire,I cannot stop looking at it from all different angles and lighting. If it is on my neck, I won't be able to do that like with my ring. Has anyone else felt like this?
I could even use my original 58 point pear shaped diamond combined with this 2.19 ct round sapphire to make a stunning necklace... if you have any ideas on that I would so appreciate it!
I had a feeling this might happen, even prior to it being shipped. Now that I see how it changes ( it is also a color-change ) I am stuck. I just cannot get over this is a creation of nature... not heated or treated. Just precision cut by one of the best!
Anyone else felt like this?
Thanks.

I really think you should put some photos up. Yes you can see it yourself more on your hand, but then your whole gestalt may be more advantageously elegant with it around your neck. Either way, pictures will be necessary for us to have an adult conversation about this.

Yes we need pictures...

oOh I would love to see photos of your ring - is there a thread on that one?

In regards to your pendant. How about a design like this? I do love the idea of doing a necklace since you already have a ring. Obviously for this design it would be switched with the sapphire being on top and the pear diamond below.

I have the link from the Gem Scoop photo as well as a hand shot that Jeff sent . Still trying to attach...
Sarahbear I really like that pendant and think the diamonds by the yard type of chain would be a good match. Little concerned about the small diamonds flipping... anyone have one?
I have always admired the look of Catmom's sapphire jewellery... her pendant with the small halo is very beautiful as well.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I have read what you wrote more than once. I still can't quite follow the post. Are you wanting opinions on another ring, or a pendant?
Either way, I think we need to see the stone(s).

sorry for the confusion. I intend to use this round sapphire for a pendant. I just feel like once it is on my neck, I won't get to see it as much as if it were set in a ring. That's what I meant.
So back to pendant ideas. I was just wondering if other people felt like this ever. Sorry to be unclear.

Ok, I get it now!!
You are going to be getting requests from the queen to be to borrow from your sapphire suite.

I would love to see your sapphire. I seem to remember Jeff saying it is a bit darker than ideal. Or perhaps I am dreaming that. It certainly looked beautiful in the pictures. And I love pendants!!!

I understand your dilemma completely. I had the intention of setting my new spessartite as a pendant to complete the set (already have a ring and earrings) but as soon as I saw the stone, it was too beautiful to be on my neck where I cannot see it. It feels such a shame for other to admire the stone but I have to be content with reflections from a mirror or some other reflective surfaces. ;))

Chrono- that is EXACTLY what I mean! Glad you understand what I am trying to say! I love being able to look at the loose stone from all angles! Have you just put the whole idea on pause for awhile?

I am still unsure what to do about whether to set it as a pendant or a ring. I’ve put up a challenge on PS for pendant design ideas to help sway my decision back into the pendant camp but other than that, it’s on hold.

There was a discussion on this topic a couple of months ago in Colored Stones. Search on "gems pendants lower" in the Colored Stones forum (Sorry I can't get links to work in PS2) to bring up a thread called "Are gems for pendants lower quality than gems for rings?". Poorer quality stones can be used for pendants than for rings, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't use higher quality stones in pendants. I have found that when I am wearing a high quality and unique pendant, more people notice and comment on it than when I am wearing a pretty ring. The pendant sits front and center, right below your face, and is far more prominent than a ring. I would not hesitate to put a stunning Jeff White sapphire into a pendant. Congratulations on a fine purchase.

Thank you Flygirl. Point well taken. I will go search for that thread right now. Sounds like a common dilemma!

Gems that I absolutely fall in love with I make into rings so I can continually admire them. Whilst, of course, pendants are beautiful, they will be admired by others rather than you being able to see it's changing personalities. If you don't want another ring, how about a bangle/bracelet? If you do that you'll have the advantage of being able to admire it and still add to your collection - you can always make a pendant later and perhaps go for a stone that you like but it doesn't rock your world quite so much!

I think I have had more people notice some of my pendants than my rings.

If you wanted to see it more, I'd put it in a ring and wear it on my right hand.

Jewelry is meant to be enjoyed, and specifically, to be enjoyed by you. Personally, I'd have more pleasure with it on my hand than on my neck - even if that means less compliments from other people.

My vote - ring!!! (although I'm sure it would be beautiful on a pendant as well).

The weather's been rainy here so I haven't yet seen this beautiful blue color show through !

Here are the photos:

The colour took my breath away, you did very well Spirit, I would set it into a ring so I can stare at it all day long.

Definitely! Color & cut are wow, superb! I'd have to be able to look at that puppy every day all day.

Congratulations!

I am a pendant gal, but I would definitely go with RING here!
I love that color, what a beauty!

OH thanks, Lovinggems, JewelFreak, and ooo~Shiney! Also with it being a color-changer I feel I will be missing out on all the fun and other people wouldn't even know to check for these things! I can see that you all understand now! A new thought to consider from Lovingdiamonds about a bangle, since that is a style of bracelet I don't have.
I really don't think that Jeff knows what kind of monsters he creates!!!

Much brighter day here today. Was able to get the new sapphie outside for some much better color viewings.Saw some arrows!
I know that a few people , like Dianabanana thought their sapphire was darker than she expected when she first opened it, but once it was set in her ring it seems the color is much more pleasing to her eye.
Has anyone else found that it doesn't look so dark once out of the box? ? Is that what it means when it has been said that blue sapphires are moody stones?

Spirit,
My blue sapphire darkened a little once it was set, so that's another factor to take into consideration. It was prong set too, without a halo or anything that blocks out too much light.

Hi Spirit, your JW sapphire is a beauty!

Just wanted to note that when I first opened the box from Jeff, it was in a darkened room with halogen lighting and I was disapointed that the stone didn't look just like the outdoor "handshot" that Jeff provided. This was purely due to my inexperience with sapphires, my expectations were obviously unrealistic! ;))

My stone didn't darken at all once set due to the open gallery. I will say that I probably wouldn't have worn the sapphire much in the evening had I not gone with the diamond halo....it really sparkles in the evening when the sapphire isn't putting on much of a show.

I understand that there are some sapphires that hold their color in all lights, mine just isn't one of them.

Hope that helps and congrats on your purchase! :wavey:

PS - I wanted to add that I would definitely set that beauty in a ring. I don't wear my halo'd ring all the time as it's quite dressy, I'd love another sapphire ring with a more casual look that I can wear when kicking around in my lululemons. Not sure how you feel about your halo but maybe the same might apply to you?

Thanks again, Chrono. I love that you feel comfortable to share your feelings on this as well as your experiences. You are very helpful!
Dianabanana!!! I was so hoping you would find this thread! I have re-read your old posts so many times . I know you have been very happy with your end result but your first glance was so disappointing to read about. So glad it all turned out so well. From my photos, do you think my new sapphire is darker than yours? It is so hard to tell!
I have been putting lots of thought into this and what you said is so accurate! My other ring turned out to be a very fancy one so maybe a good idea to have this one in a more simple setting so I could play with the color and sparkle on a regular basis.
I still have the pendant idea in mind but do fear that not enough light would enter since it would sit flatly on my neck, whereas if set in a ring light could enter at all angles as well as with my hand moving around.
PSers, I love this dilemma, and feel very appreciative that I am in this position! Takes my mind of real world problems for a bit, ya know?

Hi there! :wavey:

I'm sure Jeff thought I was a nutter when it wasn't love at first sight for me. :rodent: I do love it now though and I can appreciate how special sapphires are, they each have their own personality. When my stone lights up, it can really take your breathe away....personally, I think you'd be missing out on that if you set it in a pendant, particularly since yours is a color changer. Just my $0.02 for what it's worth.

I don't think yours is darker but I think we're seeing the color change come into play a little, or perhaps some of my facets are a little larger being a cushion?....I don't describe color nuances very well so maybe TL or Chrono will tell us what they think. Here they both are side by side in the same lighting set up....

Spirite and DB Sapp.jpg

DB I love how you did that with the photos to compare! Thank you for taking the time !
Yours is really stunning. I hope when you wear it you feel like royalty! ( Truth is a lot of us here think these JW cut sapphires are PrincessDiana/Kate M/ worthy!)
I hope some experts here join in with their color comparisons.
DB is your color/ tone almost the same as Lostsapphires? I don't know what is happening - my eyes or my computer - but so many seem to be from the same hue. The new "SteveNeedsARing" guy also looks almost the same!
