So, I''ve been told by my doc to eat more salt because my blood pressure is pathetic (it was high 80s over 50''s when I was in the doctors yesterday). It also dips because I''m pregnant and have an underlying medical issue, so I pass out pretty frequently. If we can get my base blood pressure up to a normal level, then when it dips it won''t be so bad. At least that''s the thinking.

Well, I personally think this is awesome, because I LOVE salt. But, it''s been a while since I lived off the stuff and I don''t eat meat so all of my old salty stand-bys are gone (I used to eat jerky and also turkey and salt sandwiches haha).

So what''re your favorite (non-meaty) salty snacks? I have to get my snack on because I need some extra calories for the baby too so I might as well kill two birds with one stone and I''m getting sick of tortilla chips.

I love Chex Mix- the bold flavor. I also really like Terra Chips- specifically the mix that has sweet potato chips as well as chips from a few other root vegetables. Trader Joe''s has a house brand of vegetable chips and I heard that they are the exact same thing as the Terra chips, just half the price. They taste and look exactly the same, so it could be true. What about popcorn sprinkled with parmesean cheese? So yummy...... I also make kettle corn on the stove top from time to time. Basically, you add about 1/4 c sugar to the oil and then add your kernals. Hit is with salt immediately when it comes out so it''ll stick.

Is it straight salt you need or food high in sodium?

Hi April, good ideas! I need straight salt mainly, but the doctor said that if I ate more snacks high in sodium it would be good too. She mentioned more straight salt because snacks that are high in sodium also tend to be high in fat/calories too.

But popcorn sounds awesome right about now! I could salt that to an oblivion!

What about those frozen pretzels that come with packets of salt? I love those, and you can make them as salty as you want. Also, the pretzel itself is pretty low-fat.

V8 juice? The original is quite salty. (I love it.)

nuts. roasted and salted.

YUM!

I was going to suggest this - great idea. I love these pretzels warmed up! And if you put a lot of salt on them you get more taste and more salt (like you need!)

We are in te same boat - I have low blood pressure - like 90 or less and she suggested me to have more salty foods myself...
i have a hard time with salty HEALTHY foods - I always end up with cheese-its and they are not that great for you. Its hard to eat meats like jerky since I am a vegetarian... I just add salt over my fish and veggies and use soysauce on my rice :)

Guacamole with salty tortilla or pita chips! Yum!!

nuts. roasted and salted.

This!

Also, (salted) peanut butter. On a spoon, on a piece of toast, whatever. Love the stuff.

I''d second salted nuts. Salt and vinegar chips. V8 juice. Make some homemade veggie soups and be liberal with the salt. Goldfish crackers. How about gatorade type drinks or club soda (don''t remember the sodium content in that) instead of water?
There are also meds that can raise your BP (like midodrine). Not sure about their safety in pregnancy, but I wonder if they would help?

I 3rd the nut recommendation and 2nd the guacamole recommendation. Both are full of good fats.

This thread is making me thirsty!!! ROFL

so is the extra spicy kind..... YUM!

Veggie crisps! My local supermarket has them by the granola/nuts/dehydrated bananas. You can also get them bagged in the health food section, by various brands. Yum...I love these things. I could eat them forever...but the salt!!

Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds

I''m a salt fiend, and my one addiction is McDonald''s french fries--they''re pretty much salt in a container with the occasional fry thrown in! Pretzels also come to mind. I found this link, and while it''s aimed at keeping salt intake up for athletes, it also has a list at the bottom of some salty foods, along with their sodium contact, and it includes a little information about salt tablets, so also good to know. Hope it helps, and if not, at least it was interesting, haha!

I like pretzels and cheese. Tons of salt.

Original Potato CHips of any kind. They almost always have the highest amount of salt in them

I love those! They''re so chewy, yummy! Yeah, just LOAD up on the salt...
Heh heh, if you get really desperate, you can load up on the Cup-O-Noodles... reminds me of my college days

How about crunchy pretzels with rock salt?

Or vegemite/marmite on lightly buttered toast? I am a strong believer in Vegemite... it tastes so good and Vitamin B is very good for you.

Salted pumpkin or sunflower seeds? I''m a little obsessed with the former!

Thanks everyone! It looks like I need to pick up some snacks now that I have some good ideas. :-)

As for marmite, that''s a great suggestion! I grew up on marmite, so I never think of it as being salty, but I suppose it is and I love it (see the marmite thread haha).

Thanks again!

pretzels...when I was pregnant last year I couldn''t get enough of pretzels (and bacon

)

Cheese and pretzel combos!

Top Ramon - the cheap noodle packs, or cup o noodles are loaded with salt.

Also, *most* salad dressings advertised as low-fat are typically full of salt as well.

A lot of soups are high in sodium, too.

As far as snacks, my faves are handy snacks - you know the crackers with the cheese, it comes with a stick to smear the cheese on - and I def second the vote for bold chex mix. Yum!

For an alternative to nuts that''s also healthy, there''s roasted salted soy nuts and edamame. Really delicious. Trader Joe''s sells the soy nuts, and Costco had a huge plastic container of the dried roasted edamame.

For a less healthy option, bagel chips or melba toast with cheese and prosciutto - lots of salt packed in there.

Pickles, salt bagels with butter, salsa on anything, tomato soup, pretty much ANY campbells soup, and soft pretzels. mmmmmmmmmm salt!
