I''m looking at an H, VS2 with excellent polish and symmetry. 2.38 carats. Depth = 60.9, Table = 56%. No fluorescence. About $24,000. What do you think. GIA.

Iceyone,

If the diamond is well cut, the price is probably fair, as compared to the best you could do here (among internet vendors).

But is it well cut? From what you''ve presented (and I take it, all that you know), you should not be able to tell.

Now that you''re here (I see this is your first post), my first recommendation is that you review the tutorial here (http://diamonds.pricescope.com/), which reviews broad suggestions for purchasing, and suggests a strong bias for well cut stones.

You show that the diamond in consideration has been certed by GIA. My first question may be: "Why GIA, and not AGS, if it is welll cut?" Although GIA is well regarded for the work they do, that it was not sent to AGS instead could give you pause, until you learn more.

Alternately, other practices may explain why it was sent to GIA. Regardless, learn more about the diamond, including at least it''s crown & pavillion angles, and perhaps get some visuals of the stone.

For $24,000, let alone the $3K and change I spent, you should know more (if not get the jewler to pop for a very nice dinner). However, I do recommend you learn more, both generally, and about this particular stone, before you plop down the cash.

Then you''ll buy with confidence...and perhaps it will be this very stone.

With best wishes,

As Ira mentioned, the most important factor in determining if that price is competitive is CUT. AGS grading reports typically include cut proportions. The most important to predict performance will be depth%, table%, (you have those), and you also need crown angle and pavilion angle.

GIA is a very reputable lab, and what they have graded is good, but they do not grade cut. Ask your vendor for a Sarin or Megascope report. That will provide you with the cut proportions, above. For the money you are looking at spending I suggest that it is important to have these measurements. An additional suggestion is to get an Ideal Scope image if possible.

Hope this is helpful and welcome to PriceScope.

How do you determine Crown and Pavilion Angles if you only have a GIA cert. Should one feel safe buying an ideal cut AGS stone from somewhere online like Blue Nile? Why is GIA so popular if it doesn''t tell us anything about cut?
