I''M SEARCHING FOR A MEN''S WEDDING BAND. - I SAW THIS A WHILE BACK ON A SKYMALL MAGAZINE ON THE AIRPLANE. I FLY OFTEN AND I THINK THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED THIS ITEM. I''VE EVEN TRIED CALLING THEM. WITH NO LUCK, I''M CALLING ALL PRICESCOPERS FOR HELP.

HERE''S THE DISCRIPTION

WHITE GOLD/PLAT (INSIDE) , 14K YELLOW GOLD (RIM), 14K YELLOW GOLD ROMAN NUMERIALS OF WEDDING DATE GOING AROUND THE ENTIRE RING (INSIDE THE RIM).

I remember those. Any of the custom jewelers here should have no difficulty making that. It''s a pretty straightforward cad/cam project. If you can hold off for a few weeks, the bench workers are pretty busy this week and probably aren''t spending much time on pricescope.

Neil, I think it is more a job for a saw piercer, then a programer. It would be much faster to sketch the numerals and cut them out of a gold sheet. Cad Cam can do it too, but the manual job would be half the way done before the programmer has sorted the correct shapes and dimensions. Then you have a wax made from the Cad file, which is cast, adding an extra process. This will not produce as good a result as by hand, as the casting will still need work to clean the edges. If a gold sheet is machined (using the stl files) with the numerals cut in according to a program, well, there is potentially extra metal waste and a huge waste of time and machine wear.

It might be worth using Cad if your doing hundreds and you have nothing better to do with machines, but even then it is too easy to do by hand to warant that.

At any rate, the ring is in 3 pieces. They need to be soldered by hand, though there are mass-production processes, if you join two full rings (stretching an annealed ring up in size to meet the harder ring). If the numerals have spaces between them then they must be soldered by hand. The rim gets soldered last. Not very difficult.

CAD CAM would be by far the best method if the ring was one solid piece, as it allows you to remove metal from the top down, which can''t be done hand nearly as well. The underlying section could be rhodium plated white, but I don''t think that is what z78 is after.

You shouldn''t have too much trouble finding somebody to do this, and it shouldn''t cost too much to do. Neil is right about xmass. Better to wait a week or two.

I know what you mean... how would you get your relevant date on the ring though? I see the model done for fun with random numbers (something like the Atlas rings at Tiffany''s) but not customized with one''s date.

I have seen some amazing stuff done with Cad Cam - wish I was equiped like you all seem to be over there. Like horses running in full bolt across a bangle. I am sure you know better then me what the potential is.
